Treasure this Island
Date: September 12, 2008 | Category: Events, Lifestyle
Yes, Treasure Island (just off the Bay Bridge) popped up all over the green radar with its plans to become an entirely sustainable community. But that will take years, so in the meantime, there’s another eco-reason to kayak over to the treasure of the Bay. The people behind the Treasure Island Music Festival on September 20th & 21st are working heartily to reduce their carbon footprint while staging an awesome music fest with a hot line-up that includes Goldfrapp, Tegan and Sara, Hot Chip, TV on the Radio and 25 more.
Biodiesel generators. A carbon offset option for ticket buyers ($1). Bauer’s zero-emission buses shuttling from AT&T Park to Treasure Island in style - their entire bus fleet utilizes advanced engine technologies and ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel to minimize environmental impact. Recycled napkins, paper towels, and toilet paper throughout the event make this one eco-lovin’ free love party.
Last year, 72% (9.2 tons) of the waste was diverted to recycling and composting. This year, they’re striving higher. So if you go, try to help them reach their goal.

Everyone has been talking about the success of the huge Slow Food event that took over San Francisco a couple of weeks ago. If you missed it or just cannot get enough, on October 5th, beneath a harvest moon at the extraordinary Barndiva Gardens in Healdsburg, Calif., Fork & Shovel is collaborating with Slow Food Russian River to throw an evening to be remembered. This is not merely an opportunity to show support for Sonoma’s premier chefs and farmers collaborative, but also a night of unique activities including a jug band, Farm Roulette and an interactive food shed walk. Of course there will also be amazing fare - appetizers and a five course, wine-paired dinner grown, cooked and served by Fork & Shovel sustainable chef and farmer teams. A Green Candle Company - Really!
Date: September 11, 2008 | Category: Home Furnishings, Kitchen, The Home

You might as well just come right out and say it - or so thought the eco-minded candle connoisseurs who donned themselves A Green Candle Company. Sticking to their word, 100% soy wax that meets both Kosher and FDA standards replaces the traditional paraffin wax that, according to the American Lung Association, emits 11 documented toxins. Their fragrances come from essential oils instead of questionable synthetics.
A Green Candle Company offers a recycling program where for every ten jars you ship back to them, they will give you a free candle. For those of you who love the ambiance created by a burning candle, that could amount to a whole lot of freebies.

Everyone Wants More Amenities
Date: September 11, 2008 | Category: Featured, Furniture, Kids

When Amenity first launched their nursery collection, we hollered their praises as the eco-friendly way to please Dwell-enthusiast parents. Now, they’ve added new designs in their signature style, and we’re sticking to our statement. This season has grown to include darling miniature blankets for security on the go; a printed percale pillowcase to celebrate the transition to a toddler bed; crib sheets of sumptuous organic cotton fleece to warm little bodies in cooler weather; and additional prints that can be mixed and matched with their older offerings. Same great color palate and darling animal graphics - so you won’t need to get rid of anything that is still practical.

Slice of Life
Date: September 11, 2008 | Category: Green Building, Home Furnishings, Kitchen

We found a beautiful way to add a slice of intrigue to any style of abode. At $78 and $148 these gorgeous Cheese Trays are a lovely way to display muchies from vegan dips to free-range kabobs. The trays are fashioned from petrified wood (fossilized oak tree to be exact) that was found in the volcanic areas of several Asian islands (dating back to the Jurassic era), then simply cut and naturally polished. Keeping a few on hand could be an easy way to add a little panache to a party.

Early Bloomer
Date: September 10, 2008 | Category: Furniture, Kids

When my kids were at the age where they spent much of the day cradled in a bouncy seat, the choices were between overly cutesie and downright ugly, with tons of plastic, powder-coated metal and obscenely bright fabric. The Bloom Bouncer, available through Pottery Barn Kids, has come to the style-loving, environmentally conscious parent’s rescue. Constructed from a single piece of patented Stylewood of certified sustainable birch, it is PCP (pentachlorophenol) free (a harmful wood preservative) and is as gentle on your family’s lungs as it is on your eyes…and the planet. As with all Bloom products (founded by four dads!), your little rocker will be ensured a safe ride without lead, BPA, phthalates, PVC, heavy metals or AZO dyes. And the cushy seat and five-point harness nestle baby securely and comfortably, so the whole family wins. Finally a bouncy seat that you don’t have to hide between bounces!
