Time to Act
Date: January 31, 2008 | Category: Events, Lifestyle, Media
Leonardo di Caprio, Orlando Bloom, Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz, David Duchovny and Kate Bosworth are just a few of the Oscar-worthy supporters of Global Green and the legendary pre-Oscar party that is rocking good fun. As a co-chair to the event, I can tell you the “Time To Act: Reduce Your Carbon Footprint” pre-Oscar party will be where it’s at in Hollywood, on Wednesday, February 20th, but it will also fund the amazing work Global Green is doing to rebuild a green New Orleans. In addition to Michelle Branch’s exclusive performance, the event will be chock-full of concerned celebrities and eco-surprises, including a copy of Domino Magazine’s eagerly-awaited green issue. To see how you can walk the green carpet, click here. I hope you will join me and let your Los Angeles cohorts know…after all, it is time to act.

Gettin’ Your Grid Off
Date: January 31, 2008 | Category: Green Building, Lifestyle, Media, The Home
Michael Reynolds founded Earthship Biotecture with a fresh vision of what a home should be: sustainable, off the grid and affordable. Out of those values, the Earthship was born, which commonly takes the form of a U-shaped, earth-rammed tire home, and though it’s not limited to such a rendition, it is the most common. Through his documentation, Reynolds has captured the beginnings of the Earthship movement in his new coffee table book, Journey Part 1 - being released this March. If you pre-order now, the first 1,000 customers receive a discount and an autographed copy. You and your guests will definitely be intrigued as you flip through these innovative pages. You may even be inspired to invest in your own off-the-grid abode.

New Twist on Grandma’s Casserole
Date: January 30, 2008 | Category: Kitchen, The Home
We seem to do a lot of worrying about food these days… Is it organic? Free-range? Shade-grown? Not to mention, we avoid plastics and (begrudgingly) gave up the, seemingly, magical power of Teflon. Now, Colombia’s handmade La Chamba cookware is the only thing we want coming between our locavore treats and us. The lead-free, non-toxic casserole dishes and bowls can be used in the oven, on the stove, and even in the microwave. The rich deep black hue comes from micaceous clay, native to central Colombia, and the pottery’s origins can be traced back 700 years. We say, tradition trumps a trendy fad any day!

Aloha Baby
Date: January 30, 2008 | Category: Home Furnishings, The Home
Die hards aside, Aloha shirts rarely make it on the “to keep” list at the end of surf season. A family-run business, based in Hawaii, called Muumuu Heaven, rescues vintage Hawaiian shirts and creates decorative pillow cases that look as much at home on a contemporary sofa as they do on the beaches of Florida Keys. Handmade by the founder’s family, 1% of the proceeds are immediately donated to the preservation of the coral reefs in the region. Our pick is the konichiwa pillow, now on sale at one of our favorite fair trade and design-conscious boutiques, Shop Equita.

Calendar Some Time to Plant
Date: January 29, 2008 | Category: Office, The Home
If you haven’t gotten around to picking up a 2008 calendar, this one will sit perfectly atop your desk with eco-chic pride. Charmingly designed by Kal Barteski, the plantable 2008 calendar, from Botanical Paperworks, is handmade with post-consumer recycled paper that the company gathers from businesses in their area (that being Winnipeg, Canada). As the months pass you by, extol your ups and downs by planting the pages in your garden and holding memories in their blooms. And, when the year is over, use the calendar’s reusable tin in any number of ways.

Time to Shred
Date: January 29, 2008 | Category: Green Building, Home Furnishings, The Home
For all you snowboarders in the house, if you can’t hit the currently very snowy slopes, settle for one of these clocks on your mantelpiece instead (though it may just be a painful reminder). Made from recycled snowboards, Snow Shack will source boards from the manufacturer of your choosing (wherever possible) to personalize your clock. Most likely, you’ll be saving a busted board that was, tragically, on its way to a landfill. We know a few thrashers who would agree, it would be a shame not to reclaim these babies. Transforming old boards into these time-telling tickers is something we can all be stoked about.
