Rescue Yourself, Rescue the World

Skip the damsel-in-distress routine! Be a RescueGirl and show your strength by donning a spunky 100 percent organic cotton tank (if you were in the market for a top, that is).
RescueGirl is dedicated to creating products that empower women of every age. Their yoga-themed greetings cards, magnets, t-shirts and tote bags are all made of eco-friendly materials, printed with soy inks and are sweatshop-free. The messages are designed to inspire both strength and calm and are aimed squarely at women. We love the idea of yoga on the beach in these duds.
Now is the time to muster up all of your will and it is certainly not the time to do the ostrich pose. Anyway, sand in the hair isn’t much fun!

Groovy and Green Dreams

Pottery Barn has a fun array of fantastic organic bedding at its adolescent daughter company, PBteen.
The Eco Chic Floral Organic Sheet Set is arguably the hippest thing in sheeting. The all-organic sheet set features a whimsical pink and brown pattern of petals, leaves and stems on a field of khaki cotton. It is complimented perfectly by the striped coordinating colors.
The bedding, which starts at $79, is also available in other girlie florals and stripes, as well as in more masculine prints. Time to make your bed…better!

Each year, a magnificent explosion of color erupts throughout India during the Festival of Colors, as people take to the streets to break down barriers and celebrate unity. So you better believe the ethical undies that draw their inspiration from this beautiful event put some oomph where the sun don’t shine.

Wildlife, Tamed Hair
Date: September 29, 2008 | Category: Beauty, Hair Care
Once named “the King of Curl” by Vogue, celebrity hairstylist David Babaii is now the self-appointed King of the Jungle thanks to his new line of hair products, David Babaii for WildAid.
A joint venture with actress Kate Hudson, a full 10 percent of the proceeds from this great new line will be donated to WildAid, a non-profit that works with governments and communities of the world to reverse the devastation of our planet’s wildlife. Its goal is a world in which local communities can improve their lives without destroying their environment, and where humanity can survive together with wildlife for generations to come. WildAid’s public service messages are seen each week by over a billion people around the world.
The line is earth-friendly, made without parabens, petrochemicals, animal products or sulfates. And – natch – they are not tested on animals.
We did, however, test them on ourselves and we were very pleased. Our manes were shiny and scented with delicious ingredients like coconut oil and fragrant white ginger. Among the styling products, our favorites were the Bohemian Beach Spray, which added volume and texture to hair without leaving crunchy clumps, and the Hair Polish, which leaves a super shiny sheen. The products are under $15 each (with the exception of the styling tools) and are available online.
So forget the idea that it’s good to be bad. David Babaii for WildAid proves that you can look good, do good and feel good simultaneously.

The Sun is Good for Solar, Not for Skin
Date: September 29, 2008 | Category: Beauty, Skin Care
Some of us might have spent too many hours searching for that golden tan and others of us just neglected to heed doctor’s warnings and wear sunscreen. Either way, spots are not sexy, so we at ecofabulous are always on the lookout for a line of anti-aging products that are up to our standards. EarthScience’s Beta-Ginseng line is said to be a serious breakthrough, so we jumped right on it.
Paraben-free, the line includes four products, which can be used together or individually. There is the Beta-Ginseng Whipped Crème Cleanser, the Beta-Ginseng Nutrient Toning Elixir, which is swept over the face with a cotton ball, the Beta-Ginseng Hydrating Day Crème and the Beta-Ginseng Cellagen Renewal Serum, which is dabbed underneath the eyes and around the mouth to plump up epidermal skin cells.
While time will tell if these products will make us look younger, the line does make the surface of the skin soft and supple instantly.
Keep in mind that the day crème does not contain sunscreen so you’ll still want to use your SPF 30 to minimize long term sun damage. But with earth and science in the name, ecofabulous is prone to be wooed.

A Frame That’s Worth a Thousand Words
Date: September 26, 2008 | Category: Home Furnishings, The Home
It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words but what does that picture’s frame say about the choices you are making?
From now on, photos of the best days of your life can be preserved and presented using the best framing practices. San Francisco-based Eco-Framing is the first custom picture-framing studio dedicated to green best practices. It creates frames made only from sustainable woods or 100 percent bamboo molding, built using museum-grade craftsmanship. As a bonus, Eco-Framing claims that they are able to reduce prices by up to 60 percent off retail because of their cost-effective purchasing and design practices, which reduce the cost of transporting materials to the shop.
In addition, the company is taking recycling to a new level: All reusable materials in the studio are converted into products; if they are unusable they are recycled, or given away on Craigslist, and the trash cans are only used as a last resort. The production studio also uses energy efficient lighting to further eco-fy the entire process.
So while others are admiring your fine taste in art or your family’s recent portrait, you can be admiring the beauty of the frames holding those treasures and the little bit of good you have done by purchasing them, instead of their alternative.

Get Your Rocks On!
Date: September 26, 2008 | Category: Green Building, Kitchen, The Home
Does the task of choosing building supplies make you feel dumber than a box of rocks? When it comes to remodeling a bathroom or kitchen it needn’t have to thanks to sustainable surface products, like Modwalls’ ModRocks pebble tile.
The natural polished pebbles are available two sizes, and in a variety of color combinations. The tile looks amazing as flooring or walls for kitchens and showers, as well as in pools and spas, on outdoor walkways and even for fireplace surrounds.
For ecofabulous’s latest project - designing and decorating the interior of the “Harbinger,” a two-story, 1,700 square foot show house currently on display on the tradeshow floor at West Coast Green – we chose the company’s recycled glass tile. Another intriguing option is the all-natural Cork Mosaic Penny Rounds, made of end cuts from a wine cork manufacturer. All of these products are mesh mounted in square foot sheets or larger as noted, for easy modular installation.
We’ll drink to that!
