Nike Kicks Waste to the Curb

If you partake in healthy leisure activities like walking, jogging or hiking, chances are you have at least one pair of worn out kicks lying around the house. Peek under the bed, dig into the back of the closet and prepare for a sneaker reincarnation, thanks to Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program.

When your sports shoes have lost their steam, bring them to a Reuse-A-Shoe drop-off location. With about 300 locations around the world, finding one near you shouldn’t be difficult. Each individual can donate up to 10 pairs of shoes at a time – and they don’t have to be Nike’s -  so ask your friends and family to hand over their old sneaks and donate them all at once. Or, if you are feeling inspired, start a group shoe drive at your school or office. (more…)

Do your teens wear their hearts on their sleeves? Well, now they can wear their environmental convictions on their T-shirts. For less than $10, your kids can assert their beliefs in these 100% organic cotton vintage tees from Target.

So, what makes organic cotton better? Glad you asked. It takes approximately one-third of a pound of chemicals to yield enough cotton for one T-shirt! Under the Canopy for Under $10!

We all know the routine with kids’ clothes:  A couple of wears, a couple of washes and before you know it they’re ready for the next size.

While the rate at which our little ones are outgrowing their apparel may not have changed, our awareness about their clothing’s composition certainly has. Five of the top nine pesticides used on conventional cotton in the U.S. are known carcinogens. But organic get ups often get passed over because moms either cannot afford it or cannot justify investing in something that will get less than a year of wear. So what’s an eco-conscious parent to do?  My suggestion: Head on over to your nearest Target.

Previous concerns that organic kids’ clothing have to come with higher price tags can be put to rest with Under The Canopy’s new line of kids’ clothing at Target. From the company that coined the term “ecofashion” comes more than 10 organic tees and onesies, all for under $10!

Quality eco-apparel for our little ones with a petite price tag to match makes it possible to save for little Sally’s college fund without sacrificing her sustainable style.

Fabrics You’ll Want to Wear

A few years ago, the idea of draping yourself in recycled polyester would have brought to mind images of Carol Brady or musty old garments. Today, the word recycled is often synonymous with wearable, eco-chic clothing. But if you are still on the fence, peopleWearSF will remove any questions about the viability of recycled fabrics.

Setting out to change preconceived notions about repurposed wares, the fashion apparel trade company is sponsoring the event, where local designers and apparel manufacturers in the San Francisco Bay Area will have the opportunity to get a glimpse of these still-emerging textiles. The first-ever Sustainable Fabric Trade show takes place Friday, October 10th between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the San Francisco State University Downtown Center campus, located at 835 Market Street between 4th and 5th Streets.

Closed to the general public, designers and apparel manufacturers should contact peopleWearSF for information.

Orange You Glad We Found This Website?

Why is it that tiny newborns raise such big questions in the minds of new moms? Instinctively, mothers want the best for their babies and often even the most thoughtless person will veer towards eco-friendly baby products when they become a parent.

When Generation Orange founder Shital Mehta gave birth to her son Krishna, now 20 months, she was intent on using only the most natural products on the market. So when she couldn’t find baby bottles made using BPA-free plastic in stores, she contacted a distributor of the bottles and ordered a case to share with friends who had also been trying to track the bottles down. As she researched other clean infant items, she realized that bottles weren’t the only hard-to-find sustainable products.

Founded by Mehta with her husband Prashanth Mysoor, Generation Orange is built on the principles of health, sustainability and community. The site provides one-stop-shopping for stylish baby and child products, including toys, clothing and foods, all made with the most natural materials available.

Generation Orange also puts a premium on giving back and works hard to partner with companies who take that principle seriously too; about 90 percent of the companies whose products are sold on the site give a portion of the proceeds to charity.

It seems that when you mix green with giving you make orange.

Small Stature, Big Style

The UglyFish motto? All great people start small. We couldn’t agree more.

UglyFish’s philosophy that great people, large and small, should be dressed smartly in clothing made from beautiful, natural materials certainly resonates with the moms among us. The company’s fall catalog is out and it is packed with adorable fashions for kids made from organic cotton, hemp, soy and wool in styles that even an adult would love to don.

Adorned with flowers, airplanes and musical instruments, the clothing sings the praises of a child’s life, utilizing features that celebrate the pastimes of childhood, like extra pockets for rock collecting and adjustable waistbands so that pants stay up even when chasing rabbits or lizards.

The tees, hoodies, vests and jackets are designed for layering, and each piece is crafted of eco-friendly materials under fair manufacturing conditions right here in the USA.
