Bag this Deal!

Ditching plastic bags is an honorable goal but if you want to lift your eco efforts to the next level, using totes made from organic cotton is the way to go. While we applaud anyone who forgoes plastic in favor of a reusable tote, many of the bags that tout themselves as eco-friendly aren’t really green.

SKN makes bags that fit the bill, ecologically speaking, and the company is currently offering ecofabulous readers a fabulous deal on its 100 percent organic cotton – and super cute – totes. The bags, which measure 12″ wide, 16″ high and 6″ deep and hold up to 40 pounds, are large enough to carry dinner home from the market and stylish enough that you can be eco on the sly if you so desire.

The bags retail for $34.95 but by typing in the promotional code “happy holidays,” ecofabulous readers will save 20 percent through Dec. 1st!

I’m sure our retail economy appreciates people buying eco friendly grocery bags. However, I have made my own bags for myself and friends from clothing that was headed for donation or the trash. A cut and sewn up leg from jeans is perfect for wine, milk or other bottles and cartons. T-shirts with graphics cut and sewn are perfect for light weight items, and heavier fabrics can be used for heavy items. If your children want new backpacks every year, the old ones have a new life as grocery bags. My personal favorite is a 10 year old Winnie the Pooh backpack that I use every week for groceries from the farmers market.

Uh… so replace the perfectly good, except not made from organic cotton bags, for these? And do what with the old ones? Throw them in a landfill?

I’ll stick with my old bags, thankyouverymuch.

I always recommend that people keep what they have, not throw them away and start new! If, I repeat, if you need bags (I do know that quite a few people are still taking paper or plastic) get organic bags.
