The Nature of Beauty

Here’s the truth about beauty: as glowing as our morals, character and values may be, a girl will always love her products – who can blame her for adoring that perfect red lipstick?

But for an ecofabulous devotee, it can be hard to sort through all the lines claiming to be “all-natural” and “eco-friendly,” only to find out that the product still contains a host of harmful chemicals, usually bearing unpronounceable names.

Earlier this year, The Nature of Beauty launched with the goal of becoming the premier source of natural and organic beauty, body and hair care in America. The Nature of Beauty has emerged as a sweet solution for concerned eco-cosmetic devotees everywhere. With a comprehensive inventory of eco-products – including those for the ladies as well as for the eco-man and mom & baby – The Nature of Beauty is the Sephora for eco-conscious consumers. (more…)

Bam-Beautiful

As an ecofabulous reader, you started to replace many of your beauty products with ecological options – sans toxins and chemical-based preservatives (always referring to the trustworthy Teens for Safe Cosmetics). And if you’re paying close attention, you are hopefully starting to question the “process” as much as the “product.” Well, the process for that pretty face can now include make-up brushes that carry your mineral-based powder from the compact to your cheekbones in full sustainable style. Me and My Big Mouth

With Hollywood starlets trying to pucker up like Angelina Jolie but instead usually ending up looking like Rocky Balboa after a fight, ecofab girls steer clear of collagen and such. So what is the best way to get your pout on? Jane Iredale’s Just Kissed Lip Plumper is a non-invasive solution to creating a fuller bouche. (more…)

What is Red and Blooms? No, not Roses!

Carrying around extra cargo just got appealing!

Cargo Cosmetics’s PlantLove Botanical Lipstick is planted inside a box made of paper embedded with real flower seeds, which can be used in your garden or flower pot. Inside the box, you’ll find a tube made entirely out of corn. In the tube is lip-loving lipstick infused with Orchid Complex and meadowfoam seed oil as well as jojoba and shea butter.

Add to that the fact that Cargo will donate $2 from the sale of every $20 tube to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and you’ll want to plant a big, bright kiss on everyone you meet.

While Cargo has done a great job of creating eco-friendly packaging, unfortunately these lipsticks still contain parabens. We applaud the company for its efforts but wish that the product inside the tube was as green as the tube itself.

Saved by the Balm

With winter on its way (or already here, depending on where you live) the ecofabulous office has been bombarded by a bevy of lip balms. One of our new favorites is from Save Your World.

Our complaint with many lip balms is that they are either waxy or greasy, neither of which feels good on your pucker. Save Your Lips lip balm is moisturizing but non-greasy and made with naturally healing ingredients, like organic aloe and coconut oil, while organic Yerba Maté adds a tiny bit of tingle. And in flavors like Green Tea, Grapefruit Mango and Pure (unflavored) there is something that will make everyone was to lick their lips.

Plus, the products are paraben-free, pH balanced, vegan, not testing on animals and packaged in recyclable packaging. And in addition, for every product you buy the company vows to donate enough to save one acre of rainforest.

Countdown to Eco Chic Shopping SF Style

If you just couldn’t justify turning Columbus Day into an excuse to shop, perhaps Appel & Frank’s Eco-Chic Shopping Event might just qualify as a must-spend evening. A few of us are making plans to attend and indulge in two of our favorite pastimes: drinking wine and shopping for great green finds!

On Thursday, Oct. 23, eco-inclined shoppers in the Bay Area have the chance to spend an evening perusing green fashion items by designers like beacauseatom and Fair Tribe, as well as ogle the wares of mineral makeup vendors, ethical jewelers, natural bath product companies, environmental media groups, vintage clothes sellers, advocacy groups, and more.

The event runs from 5-9 p.m. at the Regency Center in San Francisco (1270 Sutter Street @ Van Ness). As incentive to get there early, the first 300 guests to walk through the doors will receive a reusable gift bag filled with green goodies like eco eye shadow, organic tea, Green Zebra guides, Bloomsberry chocolate, and other treats.

You can pre-order tickets online at the two-for-one price of $15. Now you can pick up all your sustainable holiday event gear on an organic shoestring budget.

A Calorie-Free Chocolate Treat

Seriously, is this stuff actually lip balm?

On a recent jaunt down Hayes Street in San Francisco, Heather picked up a tube of Ganache for Lips in a tiny boutique called jacqueline talbot. The lip balm, which is made using Scharffen Berger Unsweetened Chocolate, smells and tastes so good that she has been licking her lips like a lunatic ever since.

The products were first cooked up in May 2003 in the kitchen of owner Patricia West, who was recovering from treatment for breast cancer. West set to work on creating an all-natural, healing lip balm for herself and her friends using aromatherapy concepts she had employed as natural remedies for the side effects of chemotherapy.

Ganache for Lips makes nine amazing flavors, all of which are 100 percent natural and free of petroleum products. And whether you are a vanilla enthusiast, deep into chocolate or like to pucker up with a lemon-flavored lip balm, none of the company’s products are tested on animals.

Just in time for winter, the creamy salves will prevent chapping… that is, of course, if you are able to resist devouring the tubes.
