It’s Coming Up Primrose
Date: January 18, 2010 | Category: Beauty, Hair Care, Resources, Stores & Resources
When we first walked into Los Angeles salon Primrose Organics, the sweet aroma of botanicals immediately put us at ease, as did the sunny demeanor of its co-owners, Felicia Howe and Melissa Tornay.
Los Angeles is rife with glitzy hair salons, most of which tend toward a cold aesthetic and factory-like treatment of clients. Not so at Primrose, where a light-filled interior decorated with vintage vanities, painted with VOC-free paint, and stylists’ inscrutable attention to your – yes, your – needs make for a warm ambiance. Advice from Auntie Flo

Riding the crimson wave. Time of the month. A visit from Auntie Flo. Whatever you call it, you know what we’re talking about. Each month you go through the same process – painful cramps, making sure you’re stocked, the thought of having to wear a swimsuit. The last thing you want to worry about is pesticides, but we’re sorry to say my friends, they’re used in products for down there as well. (more…)
Teen Tuesday: Stop Clowning Around
Date: February 17, 2009 | Category: Beauty, Hair Care, Resources, Teens for Safe Cosmetics
Teens Turning Green guest editor: Clara Dessaint, a junior at Lycee Francais School, NY, New York.
Hi, I’m Clara! Until recently, I had a mound of dehydrated, tangled fluff as an excuse for hair. People had fallen into the pattern of affectionately – or not so affectionately! – calling it “Fro Fro the Clown”. It was a mess of volume, loose curls, and split ends. For years, I tried all the rejuvenating, hydrating, and de-frizzing products I could get my hands on. I would chop my hair off strategically, obsessively; as if one less inch would give me the sleek locks I wanted. But you know what happens to curly hairs when it gets shorter? It gets frizzier! I was fighting a losing battle…
Until I met my new essential, my knight in a shiny red wrapper: Desert Essence’s Red Raspberry Shampoo and Conditioner. From one day to the next my hair lost the “I-just-electrocuted-myself-with-high-voltage” look and all of a sudden it was smooth, and shiny! Now, I might not have to tease, pull, and tweak my hair into soft waves, but I also know that it’s all thanks to my 100% Vegan shampoo. So now when you meet me, you meet Clara – not “Fro Fro the Clown” towering up above.
