Poetic Embellishment

Imagine the perfect dinner party, to which you would invite Dostoyevski, Emily Frost, Tom Waits, and Mozart – now imagine what on earth you would wear. Blank Verse designers Jane Farrar and Laamie Young did just that, and then brought the vision to life through draping vintage necklaces, glovlettes and cuffs made with leather scraps, flea market finds and vintage lace – each with their own story. One Nation, Under Gold

We’ve long been fans of Kris Nations’ delicate jewelry line (and no, not just because she has an entire collection dedicated to a love for owls). The variety of nature-inspired, art-deco inspired, mid-century inspired, and classic designs are all as stunningly beautiful as they are eco-friendly, using recycled metals in your choice of sterling silver overlay or 14k gold overlay, as well as making sure all gemstones are Fair Trade sourced. 2009 Gorgeous & Green Gala

This year’s Gorgeous & Green gala to benefit Global Green USA was another smashing success. The evening kicked off with an incredible intimate VIP dinner featuring O Organics prepared by Iron Chef Mourad Lahlou, Chef Louis Maldonado, and Pastry Chef Melissa Chou of Michelin Star Aziza Restaurant in San Francisco, followed by a private acoustic performance by the talented Matt Nathanson. Style & Substance: “Gifts Giving Back” Event

‘Tis the season for giving in many forms – gifts, thanks, and assistance to the less fortunate whenever possible. It’s also the season for champagne soirees as displayed at last week’s “Gifts Giving Back” event to benefit Toys for Tots in Los Angeles, put on by our friends at Coco Eco Magazine, Love Heals jewelry, Fred Segal Santa Monica, and Greenbees, among other ethical vendors.

The spirit of glitter and glam – inspired in part by celebrity chair Rachael Leigh Cook (pictured above with Rachel Avalon, winner of the Project Green Model Search) and the participation of ecofabulous-favorite, Linda Loudermilk – was alive and well. Many a stylish green shopper showed up with a donation for Toys for Tots, and took the opportunity to peruse some of Fred Segal’s many green gift options. While artists from Tarte Cosmetics gave mini makeovers and organic burgers from O! circulated the crowd, guests learned more about co-chair Love Heals’ ambitious, charitable mission. (more…)

Laser Focused

Laser-cut products are all the rage these days – from art, to rugs, to metal sculptures and jewelry. But cool as the designs may be, we only get elated over these technological breakthroughs when ensured that they are using their innovation for good (design, that is). (more…)

Best of the Breast: The Greenest Pink Ribbon Purchases

Women’s ta-tas are all the talk these days. October is national breast cancer awareness month, and by now you’re probably more than inundated with pink ribbon products that donate a portion of proceeds to breast cancer research or help fund mammograms. The ironic (and unfortunate) thing about many of these products is that they often contain chemicals that are not only harmful to the environment, but have been linked to cancer. (more…)

Jump for Joy

Finding jewelry for everyday use can be tricky – pieces are either too simple, or too over-the-top glamorous for the office. And cheap, trendy jewelry is not only designed for a one-season-use shelf life, but is often made of toxic plastic (PVC) and other environmentally hazardous materials. Needless to say, we literally jumped for joy upon discovering Joy O Designs effortlessly chic, handmade jewelry. (more…)

When Silver Wins First Place

Hand fabricated and hand carved in her New York studio, Margarette Simmons’ line of jewelry made out of recycled silver takes home the winning medal, hands down. The delicate designs add a polished touch to any outfit – check out the intricately carved blade of grass bangle or the large wishbone necklace.

The various pendant necklaces are great for the day-to-day staple piece (we adore the anchor necklace!), or layer any one with the intricate Knotted Rope Link Necklace for a more substantial look.

Unchain My Heart

Late fashion savant Coco Chanel once decreed that when accessorizing, you should “always take off the last thing you put on.” This style maxim has oft been echoed, but being espoused by Madame Chanel herself doesn’t make it brassbound fact. Designer Nanci Bennett balks in the face of such restraint, finding inspiration for her punky, yet feminine jewelry line in the beauty of excess. (more…)
