Au Natural(ista)

Go au natural this winter with footwear built with care and respect all the way down to the sole. The Spanish company El Naturalista makes beautiful shoes with vegetable-tanned leather, using natural, found, and recycled materials. The company symbol, a frog, references a land made fertile by water. It embodies simple worldly pleasures, and, reflecting the company’s nonconformist character, represents their permanent fight against stagnation. (more…)

Recruiting Buffalo Soldiers

The most eco-friendly way to acquire new clothes is to buy them second-hand. But the words “thrift shop” don’t always conjure images of couture, and the idea of sifting though musty racks keeps many people away. But breathing new life into used items is a tenet of green living, which is why everyone seems to be excited that Buffalo Exchange, a hip clothing exchange shop with locations all over the country, is expanding into New York City.

Buffalo Exchange’s first store in Manhattan, at 332 E. 11th Street (between 1st and 2nd Avenue), will open in late November. A sustainable company that works to protect the environment by reusing and recycling clothing, it is a choosy shopper’s source for fashionable clothing and accessories. Items are bought, sold and traded directly with store customers, and used garments can be traded for any item in the store, including jewelry and brand-new clothing (beware of these un-eco items, though). The ever-changing inventory includes designer wear, vintage clothing, jeans, leather and one-of-a-kind items.

So march down to the East Village and trade in your old duds for some new (to you!) ones.

Nike Kicks Waste to the Curb

If you partake in healthy leisure activities like walking, jogging or hiking, chances are you have at least one pair of worn out kicks lying around the house. Peek under the bed, dig into the back of the closet and prepare for a sneaker reincarnation, thanks to Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program.

When your sports shoes have lost their steam, bring them to a Reuse-A-Shoe drop-off location. With about 300 locations around the world, finding one near you shouldn’t be difficult. Each individual can donate up to 10 pairs of shoes at a time - and they don’t have to be Nike’s -  so ask your friends and family to hand over their old sneaks and donate them all at once. Or, if you are feeling inspired, start a group shoe drive at your school or office. (more…)

Soleful Mission

When in need of a quick pick-me-up, we often find ourselves indulging in retail therapy as a pastime. A genuinely rough day may call for a beeline straight to the shoe department. But all too often the pendulum immediately swings back and we are stung with shopper’s guilt (how can I possibly justify these? Even if they are eco-friendly?). Now you can offset your inner Carrie Bradshaw splurge by donating a pair of outdated shoes for every new pair you buy.   (more…)

The City of Angels Earns Its Wings

The red carpet got striped in green last weekend with the launch of Designers & Agents’ First Annual Green Market Event. Held from October 17th to 19th, D&A played host to more than a thousand leaders in sustainable fashion, design, lifestyle and community, including some of our fav designers, Form & Fauna, Edun, Stewart + Brown and Loomstate, and our friends over at Inhabitat who chatted up visitors in the “Green Room.”  Co-hosted by contemporary furnishings guru, FordBrady, the trade show also marked the debut of Coco Eco Magazine by Anna Griffin.

Designers who wished to participate in the event had to demonstrate that at least 60 percent of their product line was made through sustainable practices. To offset the carbon footprint of those traveling from afar, a tree was planted in honor of each registered guest. Green Market Co-founders, Barbara Kramer and Ed Mandelbaum, hope the synergy created from bringing so much talent together under one living roof will inspire more fashion-forward businesses to grow from the root up.

Countdown to Eco Chic Shopping SF Style

If you just couldn’t justify turning Columbus Day into an excuse to shop, perhaps Appel & Frank’s Eco-Chic Shopping Event might just qualify as a must-spend evening. A few of us are making plans to attend and indulge in two of our favorite pastimes: drinking wine and shopping for great green finds!

On Thursday, Oct. 23, eco-inclined shoppers in the Bay Area have the chance to spend an evening perusing green fashion items by designers like beacauseatom and Fair Tribe, as well as ogle the wares of mineral makeup vendors, ethical jewelers, natural bath product companies, environmental media groups, vintage clothes sellers, advocacy groups, and more.

The event runs from 5-9 p.m. at the Regency Center in San Francisco (1270 Sutter Street @ Van Ness). As incentive to get there early, the first 300 guests to walk through the doors will receive a reusable gift bag filled with green goodies like eco eye shadow, organic tea, Green Zebra guides, Bloomsberry chocolate, and other treats.

You can pre-order tickets online at the two-for-one price of $15. Now you can pick up all your sustainable holiday event gear on an organic shoestring budget.

Be Green from Toe to Toe

Eco fans of Converse can finally run around town without controversy.

These hip green low-top sneakers from Autonomie Project are made of 100 percent Fair Trade-certified organic cotton canvas and the rubber sole is produced and stamped with FSC-certified all natural and sustainable latex. That means the rubber on the Ethletic low-top sneakers was actually tapped from a tree in a well-managed forest, not made from chemicals like many other “rubber” products. All the dyes used on the canvas are PCP and AZO free.

Autonomie Project isn’t so cliche as to only have the tag color of all enviros. No, they also offer blue, black and white in their low-top, as well as their high-top, so now you can kick it old school regardless of what school you went to!

NY Fashion Week Goes EcoChic

New York Fashion Week kicked off at the American Museum of Natural History on Sept. 10 with Be EcoChic, a showcase of sublimely green fashions by some of today’s most celebrated designers.

The event was everything a fashion show should be: form and functionality combined with a flair for the funky, like designs made entirely of seaweed from Linda Loudermilk, or a recycled raffia jacket by Ralph Rucci. And to make it even more fabulous, a gaggle of celebrities - including Lauren Hutton, Adrien Grenier and Patti Hansen - modeled the clothing.

The Be EcoChic fashion show was a national awareness campaign supported by Johnson & Johnson Beauty Care and its brands AVEENO®, Neutrogena® and Neutrogena® Cosmetics, Mercedes Benz, Continental Airlines, Lycra, PJ Madison’s, and the event’s Advisory Board which included Carl Pope from the Sierra Club, Fern Mallis of IMG Fashion, and Kimberly Pinkson of the EcoMom Alliance.

To read more about the show and about other NY Fashion Week news, check out additional coverage on Inhabitat.
