‘Tis the Season for Eco-Gifting
Date: December 12, 2008 | Category: Events, Holiday & Gift, Lifestyle
The holiday season is the most drastic example of unconscious consumerism - we are usually so busy that even the most thoughtful of us forget our priorities. Taking the planet, the economy and the individual into consideration this year is easier than ever! If you like buying thing in person and live on the west coast there are a couple of year of expos that make the one-stop eco shop a reality. The Eco Holiday event in San Francisco and the Eco Gift Festival are great places to see many things in our eco gift guide come to life.
The first annual Eco Holiday event is a local shopping experience, presented by the Urban Alliance for Sustainability (UAS), a non-profit co-op based in San Francisco. This is a kid-friendly shopping event that boasts clowns, elves, jugglers and magicians!
The Eco Gift Festival in Santa Monica is devoted to alleviating the difficult emotions, inconveniences and terrible waste created by the conventional shopping experience. With 93 percent of all waste from the event diverted from the landfill, you can trust that these folks are committed to the cause. This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, enjoy great music, organic food and enlightening speakers in addition to the great gift getting. Stock up for family and friends knowing that 10 percent of the gross proceeds will be donated to The Whole Planet Foundation and Global Green USA.
P.s., Santa requested some Vosges organic chocolate instead of those stale cookies kids keep leaving!

A Huge Success for Gorgeous & Green

This year’s Gorgeous & Green event was another ravishing success. Rockin’ out with Elliott Yamin, drooling over the eco-chic fashion show put on by Lily Achatz and Clarissa Nicosia and enjoying libations from VeeV and Square One Organic Vodka - a good time was had by all, and all for the good of Global Green. Thanks again to everyone that came out, contributed and donated.
We wanted to share some of the photos and media coverage highlights from the event. See you next year!

Calling All Recyclers
Date: November 14, 2008 | Category: Events, Lifestyle, Stores & Resources, Tech
Does figuring out how to dispose of your old cell phone responsibly make you want to dial “F” for frustrated?
According to a global consumer survey from Nokia, 44 percent of old mobile phones are lying in drawers at home and not being used, nor recycled. But there is some good news: 20 years ago, only about 1,000 curbside recycling programs existed in the United States; today there are more than 10,000 across the nation. And we can now recycle more products than ever, including our old cell phones. While you can’t put them in the curbside bin just yet, there are programs in place that make it easy to keep them out of the landfill and often getting them in the hands of people who actually NEED them.
In honor of America Recycles Day on November 15th (that’s tomorrow!) we ask that you save a cell phone from a life of neglect or the dreaded trip to a landfill. Call your friends, take the recycling pledge and head to one of the nearly 5,000 recycling drop-off points around the globe. And if you absolutely can’t make it to a center, you can download free postage online and mail your phone. It’ll be worth the trip if you can alter the destiny of just one phone.
The Scoop from Opportunity Green ‘08

Green entrepreneurs got right to business this morning at the Opportunity Green Conference in Los Angeles; founded by Mike Flynn and Karen Solomon. Speakers and attendees alike are here sharing ideas on sustainability, profitability and our challenging economy. The speaker roster is diverse at it is impressive - our own Zem Joaquin spoke this afternoon on a panel titled “What’s Hot What’s Not What’s Next: The latest Trends in Sustainability”. Earlier this morning, Patagonia’s Vice President, Rick Ridgeway offered invaluable insight on the long road to sustainable success, as well as their commitment to being a leader in the green industry. Jane Savage, a 12 year design alum at NIKE, presented their ’Considered Design’ line; an impressive commitment to a closed loop production cycle. We can all sleep in peace knowing that Nike’s Jordan’s from this point forward will always be ‘Considered’! In 2011 all Nike shoes will be ‘Considered’, in 2015 all apparel, and in 2020 all equipment! More deets to come…for more info: www.opportunitygreen.com

Be an Organic Maverick
Date: November 7, 2008 | Category: Events, Food & Drink, Lifestyle
There is a revolution brewing. It is bubbling in that pot you have simmering on the stove and gaining steam inside your grocery bag. If you live in or near the Big Apple, now is your chance to become a warrior in the revolution towards organics.
On November 11th, The Organic Center and Rodale Institute will present Ripe for Revolution at the Chelsea Art Museum, located at 556 West 22nd Street in New York City. The event will unite leaders from a variety of fields to share information on today’s most pressing ecological issues and discuss how and why organic foods are the solution to these problems. Climate change, declining human health, world hunger, and other issues will be discussed in what can only be a thought-provoking event.
According to The Organic Center, if organic farming methods were practiced on all the planet’s food-growing land, it would be like taking more than 1.5 billion cars off the road, which makes organic farming a code red global issue. Closer to home, The Organic Center has found that the average child in America is exposed to five pesticides daily in their food and drinking water. Yuck!
Tickets are $125 but for a limited time they are being offered at two tickets for the price of one. Click here to reserve your spot at this tasteful event.
