The Answer is Clear

There has been a lot of talk about the potential harm of various types of plastic. One of the most commonly used plastics is the tupperware containers used for leftovers and to pack your lunch in. At microwave temperatures, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration has stated that it’s possible for chemicals from these plastics to “migrate” into food - decidedly not so delicious. But what’s an eco-conscious cook to do with leftovers? The answer is clear, use glass containers! Frigoverre happens to be our favorite but there are plenty of other brands available as well, the point is that they’re glass.

Glass containers don’t leach chemicals when they are heated, the way plastic can. Another sub-benefit of glass storage is that the pieces are so nice they can be used for storage, and also for serving (the big container looks looks like a large casserole dish).

Don’t Be a Turkey: Entertain Greenly this Holiday Season

Chekhov once famously wrote, “People are far more sincere and good-humored at speeding their parting guests than on meeting them.” It isn’t that entertaining isn’t enjoyable, just that hosting holiday celebrations can be stressful, especially if you are trying to make more eco-friendly choices around the house.

But preparing an organic meal and decorating with an eye towards sustainability needn’t be nerve-racking since there have never been more green products on the market. You just need to know where to look. This year, ecofabulous has done the shopping for you (OK, you still have to purchase the bits you want, but we make it easy!). (more…)

Be an Organic Maverick

There is a revolution brewing. It is bubbling in that pot you have simmering on the stove and gaining steam inside your grocery bag. If you live in or near the Big Apple, now is your chance to become a warrior in the revolution towards organics.

On November 11thThe Organic Center and Rodale Institute will present Ripe for Revolution at the Chelsea Art Museum, located at 556 West 22nd Street in New York City. The event will unite leaders from a variety of fields to share information on today’s most pressing ecological issues and discuss how and why organic foods are the solution to these problems. Climate change, declining human health, world hunger, and other issues will be discussed in what can only be a thought-provoking event.

According to The Organic Center, if organic farming methods were practiced on all the planet’s food-growing land, it would be like taking more than 1.5 billion cars off the road, which makes organic farming a code red global issue. Closer to home, The Organic Center has found that the average child in America is exposed to five pesticides daily in their food and drinking water. Yuck!

Tickets are $125 but for a limited time they are being offered at two tickets for the price of one. Click here to reserve your spot at this tasteful event.

Giving Water a Voice

Water’s been getting a bad rap lately due to its connection with the wasteful plastic bottle industry. Last week, ecofabulous attended an event in New York where PŪR gave water a voice by inviting a panel of experts to discuss the effects of the water bottling industry and release breakthrough technology in the field of water filtration.

While many of us have adopted the recycling regime, an astonishing 38 billion plastic water bottles are still thrown away each year. Even if we reach the point where we are recycling 100% of the plastic bottles, the production process still requires a huge amount of energy. The U.S. requires more than 1.5 million barrels of oil each year in order to meet the bottle-making demands of Americans – that’s enough to fuel 100,000 U.S. cars for a year. (more…)

Chipotle Dishes Up Green Stuff

Fast food is often a dirty word in the eco world given the “mystery meat” they commonly serve, the pervasive smell of fresh VOC’s (at least, I think that is the smell) and the massive amount of waste they produce.

Chipotle Mexican Grill is looking to change all that by expanding on its existing green practices to create products and restaurants that are beneficial to both its patron and the environment. From a local produce program, to cooking with sustainable meats, to building restaurants that qualify for LEED certification, the chain hopes to take the bellyache out of fast food. (more…)
