Bamboo Co-Cruising

Who knew that one of the greenest ways to get around town could be even greener? Craig Calfee, the founder of Calfee Designs, has made carbon frame bikes for the biking world’s elite (including Tour de France victors), but we fell in love with his bamboo triple bike (can easily be converted into a tandem) and keep picturing ourselves cycling off into another era.

Calfee built his first bamboo bike in 1996, and praise from friends and coworkers resulted in the bikes coming into mainstream production in 2005. They are truly functional and have won numerous cycling awards, but environmental enthusiasts cheer about their eco-friendly construction – which includes hemp fiber lugs and a tung oil finish. Now, what started out as a publicity stunt for Calfee has gained a more noble purpose: Craig traveled to Ghana with Earthwatch Institute in 2007 and just returned from another visit to empower Ghanaians to use their abundant local bamboo resources to build bamboo cargo bikes for their own use. Stay tuned for how the overseas effort evolves, or get your own. At around $3k they are not your daughter’s bicycle, but she can hop on back!

Fueling Oil Alternatives

Have you ever tried to explain to your friends and family the complexity of our historic relationship with fossil fuels, its effect on health, our wars, and our leaders? Did you then try to explain all the benefits of bio-fuel and renewable energy sources? How do we deal with bio-fuel’s relationship with recent food cost crisis and rainforest deforestation?

Take a deep breath – - – Bio diesel activist and filmmaker Josh Tickell has done all the initial work for us, now we can spread the word with his powerful documentary film: FUEL

Initially titled ‘Fields of Fuel’, the film won the Audience Award for Best Sundance Documentary 08. EcoFabulous attended the green carpet premiere last night in Los Angeles. Celebrities and green notables like Paul Hawken were all in attendance and gave Josh his 12th standing ovation. FUEL is incredibly comprehensive, intimate and fun. Josh takes us on a personal life journey that we can all relate to: His mother’s illness, the family relationship with oil pollution in their community, oil related sicknesses such as cancer and reproductive problems, September 11th, the war in Iraq, our nation’s relationship with fuel down the line of several key presidents and the history of bio-fuel. Thankfully he also addresses some of the exciting possibilities for new bio-fuels made of algae and bio-waste!

It’s inspiring, educational and entertaining to say the least – and it’s delivered in a way that’s easy for everyone to understand. With our financial institutions crumbling and elections coming up, FUEL offers critical solutions our safety. This really is a must see right away, so have a marvelous weekend and see if a little Fuel fits in to your busy schedule.

A Zenn Experience

From the exotic and super sexy Tesla Roadster to the itty bitty, undeniably cute Smart car, choices for a different way to drive are more diverse and more accessible than ever. The new Canadian Zenn Motor Company is now trying to drive sales of their little electric zoomer – with plans for expansion. As of now, the current cityZenn gets 30-50 miles on one battery charge at a price of an estimated $.02 per mile. The EPA estimates its equivalent in petrol would be 280MPG, not bad for a car that costs under $20,000. And maintenance for the mini phenomenon is minimal since oil changes are nil. The affordable Zenn breathes new life to the electric car. Check out where it’s being sold near you, click here.
