From Birkenstock to Couture - A Panel on Eco Fashion
Date: September 15, 2008 | Category: Beauty, Events, Fashion, Featured, Women
Are eco-friendly clothes and accessories a passing fad, or is fashion on a path to a healthier planet? Tonight the Commonwealth Club will present a panel of experts, including our own Zem Joaquin, who will discuss the attributes and future of the eco-fashion movement. Industry leaders will share their perspectives on the subject. Moderated by Lynda Grose, assistant professor of fashion design at California College of the Arts, the panel will also include the founder and designer for Del Forte Denim, Tierra Forte; Caren Holzman, director of category management for TransFair USA; Maggie Kim, co-founder and designer for oda; and Joslin Van Arsdal, owner of the hip San Francisco eco-fashion boutique Eco Citizen. Some questions that are likely to be addressed include whether eco-fashion is just superficial fashion hype, what factors are driving eco-fashion forward, whether consumers will always have to balance fashion against sustainability and cost, and what factors tend to affect these decisions. Please join us for this exciting conversation!
Location: Temple, 540 Howard Street, San Francisco.
Time: 6 p.m. check-in, program begins at 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. reception and party
Cost: $15 for Commonwealth members, $25 for non-members. Click here for ticket information.
Also know: This program is limited to attendees aged 21 and over.

Yes, stylish little cakes are all the rage, but these perfect confections have the added bonus of being dairy-free. With cocktail-inspired flavors like toasted coconut colada, lemon drop and strawberry daiquiri, you know you are in for a seriously good time. Out of the goodness of our hearts, the rest of the ecofabulous team has been taste testing Come Hither’s treats. (more…)
Everyone Wants More Amenities

When Amenity first launched their nursery collection, we hollered their praises as the eco-friendly way to please Dwell-enthusiast parents. Now, they’ve added new designs in their signature style, and we’re sticking to our statement. This season has grown to include darling miniature blankets for security on the go; a printed percale pillowcase to celebrate the transition to a toddler bed; crib sheets of sumptuous organic cotton fleece to warm little bodies in cooler weather; and additional prints that can be mixed and matched with their older offerings. Same great color palate and darling animal graphics - so you won’t need to get rid of anything that is still practical.
These Crayons Rock
Date: September 10, 2008 | Category: Featured, Kids, Toys

We love these Crayon Rocks, not only as an alternative to conventional color sticks made from non-renewable resources, but also because the unique shape is both creative and designed to strengthen young kids’ grip muscles in preparation for learning to write. Occupational therapists frequently use these colorful pebbles to help young ones develop fine motor skills.
In truth, they’re just downright fun (and fabulous) to draw with for people of all ages. Made of a soft soy wax (grown in the USA) and tinted with natural mineral powders, Crayon Rocks make vibrant colors and beautiful textures (like pastels) while remaining completely non-toxic. Small things create beautiful, refrigerator-worthy masterpieces. But if the result isn’t all that, the vibrant stones are so appealing, they could create an art installation of their own!

I have long been a rose gold fanatic, since it complements my skin tone better than the other hues, but yellow and white gold fans can get their 14k dreams answered too. Tirana Limited Edition Butterfly Bracelet has made the whole office a flutter. We love that it is forged from recycled post-consumer precious metals in New York City. But there is even even more to feel good about when adopting your butterfly. (more…)
Adapting to a Greener Future

Surfing the net feels eco-friendly (I guess anything that has surfing as part of it sounds clean). It makes us feel good that we’d probably be using up precious resources like paper and gas if the world wasn’t at our fingertips via laptop (with a CO2 Saver downloaded of course). Dig a little deeper though, and you’ll see that your connection could be much greener than you even imagined. (more…)

Though we are all somewhat sleep deprived, the little we get should be peaceful and restorative, right? So it’s more than mildly unsettling that most mattresses off-gas chemicals that are lung irritants and bioaccumulate in our dormant bodies. Thankfully, alternatives exist. (more…)

Protecting our children is the most important job of every parent. We try—albeit sometimes in vain—to shield them from all of life’s harsh realities. Smart Call

Samsung’s newest phone may be simple but the casing is made of a tasty corn-based bio-plastic, the packaging is made of recycled materials, and it has cool eco-features, like a warning to unplug it when it’s fully charged. You won’t get all of the intrigue of a Blackberry or an iPhone, but getting one would be a pretty clean call, should you be in the market for a new mobile phone (but, remember, if the one you have does the job, stick with it). Also remember to recycle your old device - many zoos have set up collection boxes to benefit animals and their disappearing terrain.
