Paradise Is a Muumuu

If a Hawaiian vacation simply isn’t in the cards, the design enthusiasts over at Plenty magazine recommend these Aloha pillows made from repurposed muumuus. And though we’re not sure the tropical vibe these accents bring to your decor will lessen the sting of a foregone trip to the islands, we do love the look and feel. Of course, the usage of recycled materials, from the fabric and piping, to the ruffles, lace and buttons, makes us want to say aloha to a bunch of them, but we will limit ourselves to only what we need. Handmade in Hawaii at Muumuu Heaven, we may not be donning the aforementioned article of clothing anytime soon (or ever)… but our couches sure can.

Join the Club Chair

Marrying a love of sleek contemporary design with a reverence for the earth, Animavi has created a line of iconic chairs and ottomans that celebrate the timeless appeal of the curve. Fit for a museum (with a price-tag to match), the sinewy set is apt to run more than $6,000. But if your castle is in need of a new throne, the Animavi is the kind of heirloom you are unlikely to outgrow.

Available in a broad palette of elegant colors and three textiles-organic felt, vegetable-dyed leather and cow-hair- Animavi uses soy-based foam and wool liners. The cushions are fully biodegradable, which means they require less time to decompose in landfills and significantly cut carbon emissions. The metal frame and other stainless steel parts can be recycled. Animavi prides itself on supporting a triple bottom line (modeling their business on economics, sustainability and social responsibility). If you’re looking for a reason to rationalize this exquisite indulgence, keep in mind that a purchase could earn you points toward LEED certification!

Meet Me at The Intersection of West Elm and Green

Growing consumer awareness about the dangers of pesticides, which have been linked to birth defects, reproductive disorders and weaker immune systems, has led another big name in retail to invest in the health of our bodies and our planet. We recently celebrated when West Elm debuted a line of high-quality, certified organic home accessories for bed and bath. We were all admittedly quite taken with their color-block shower curtains, which come in three handsome color combinations and are reasonably priced at $49. Then we noticed that the vinyl liner was sold separately (in other words, totally unnecessary and icky). Nonetheless, their plush organic cotton towels and bath mats come in a bold selection of earthy solids and sexy prints and are made with non-toxic dyes. So, if you’re in the market for a housewarming gift or your towels and linens have outworn their wear, give your dollars a voice at West Elm, and hopefully they’ll just keep growing greener.

Screen my Walls

Given that bamboo plants can grow as much as one foot in 24 hours, it’s one of nature’s most generous gestures. Now the wild weed can be tamed. You can conjure up the Hollywood diva within and slip into something more comfortable behind this sinewy screen, without fretting about deforestation. Crafted from bamboo grown in Indonesia, Thailand and China, the screen lends privacy to any interior. Available in chocolate, natural, green or black, the versatile Yin-Yang Bamboo Panel folds away to only 7 inches. Created without the use of formaldehyde-based glues, the company supports fair trade practices and does not employ child labor. Now that is something we can get behind.

Sleeping Beauty

The benefits of a good night’s sleep are well documented. Giving your mind and body precious time to rejuvenate allows you to work more productively and play more enjoyably. But even the soundest night’s rest will not make you healthier if you’re inhaling dangerous toxins while you sleep.

Back to School in College Green

As I plan my return to the East Coast, the need for a greener living space has come to the forefront of my plans. As such, I began to hunt down the must-have ingredients for a truly ecofabulous college dorm room and returned with some great alternatives.

For starters, I chose the set of 100% Bamboo twill fiber sheets from Bed, Bath, and Beyond to adorn the mattress pad and pillows, courtesy of Natura. After, I selected an organic wool comforter from Rawganique, perfect for those chilly Boston evenings. To give the plain polyester rug a little eco-character, I added a shag rug manufactured from reclaimed t-shirt shreds, available at Gaiam. A 100% recycled rubber bulletin board from The Container Store will make my hectic school projects easier to organize without disturbing the overloaded ecosphere. For my desk, I got this adjustable LED desk lamp, also from Gaiam, and the Vers 2x iPod speaker dock, which is perfect for “in-room” parties!
