Date: September 11, 2008 | Category: Home Furnishings, Kitchen, The Home

You might as well just come right out and say it - or so thought the eco-minded candle connoisseurs who donned themselves A Green Candle Company. Sticking to their word, 100% soy wax that meets both Kosher and FDA standards replaces the traditional paraffin wax that, according to the American Lung Association, emits 11 documented toxins. Their fragrances come from essential oils instead of questionable synthetics.
A Green Candle Company offers a recycling program where for every ten jars you ship back to them, they will give you a free candle. For those of you who love the ambiance created by a burning candle, that could amount to a whole lot of freebies.

Keeping a few on hand could be an easy way to add a little panache to a party.

Charlie Is So Helpful Around the House

Conventional household cleaners often contain chemicals (surfactants) which don’t easily biodegrade in sewage treatment plants (thus contaminating our waterways) and have been identified by the EPA as endocrine disrupters (hormone trickers). Not the All-Purpose Cleaner from Charlie’s Soap company, which quite frankly is one of the best cleaning agents we’ve ever used. (more…)
Through the Looking Glass

While scrubbing and scouring are not inherently fabulous, dirty windows can obscure even the most majestic of views. Yet most commercial household cleaners are loaded with VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) that are damaging to you and the planet. Linked to respiratory ailments, these toxins also contaminate our estuaries. Renowned home design expert Isabella Smith has created a beautiful line of natural cleaning products that combine powerful cleansing abilities with environmental sensitivity.
Non-toxic and biodegradable, Maison Belle’s glass and countertop cleaners come in kitchen complimenting lemon vanilla, lavender mint and grapefruit bergamot. Packaged in recycled materials (so chic, you’ll want to display them not hide them behind the cupboards), they’re as gentle on the ecosystem as they are on your olfactory system.

Dishing on Zak

I am not a fan of any petroleum based plastic but some summer parties, especially when adjacent to a pool, are a little scary without dishes that you can safely drop. Zak Designs are a big hit with my kids and their friends because they come in abright, fun colors (orange, magenta, turquoise and kiwi). And none of the under eight crowd realize that they are recycled melamine. For more sophisticated outdoor BBQs (now that may actually be an oxymoron), Zak’s black and red bowls are a cool alternative to disposables (read our previous post here).
