Small Stature, Big Style

The UglyFish motto? All great people start small. We couldn’t agree more.

UglyFish’s philosophy that great people, large and small, should be dressed smartly in clothing made from beautiful, natural materials certainly resonates with the moms among us. The company’s fall catalog is out and it is packed with adorable fashions for kids made from organic cotton, hemp, soy and wool in styles that even an adult would love to don.

Adorned with flowers, airplanes and musical instruments, the clothing sings the praises of a child’s life, utilizing features that celebrate the pastimes of childhood, like extra pockets for rock collecting and adjustable waistbands so that pants stay up even when chasing rabbits or lizards.

The tees, hoodies, vests and jackets are designed for layering, and each piece is crafted of eco-friendly materials under fair manufacturing conditions right here in the USA.

Earthwise Kids

Reading with kids is not only the quintessential way to spend quality time together, but also a golden (or should I say ‘green’) opportunity to instill a love of learning about and sustaining our planet. Earthwise Kids‘ books impart principles of stewardship through tales of protecting our oceans, land and wildlife. Printed on recycled paper with soy-based inks, their volumes feature beautifully illustrated pages with practical ideas and suggestions for respecting our planet. They also sell cute, corresponding organic cotton tees (printed with low-impact dyes), all of which come in gift sets wrapped and ready to give in reusable and biodegradable jute bags. What a great idea for a smart gift.

As summer fades into fall, it’s time, once again, for ecofab parents to stock up on back-to-school necessities. When it comes to our children’s health, we shouldn’t underestimate the importance of buying certified organic cotton underwear. Green Edge Kids also offers a great selection of high quality, modestly priced clothing and undies for boys and girls that are made from certified organic cotton using low impact dyes that are guaranteed sweatshop-free.

Teach our Children Well

Long before environmental consciousness made it fashionable, Henry David Thoreau warned to “Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes.” While we adults can get by with a few choice additions each year, our children have a peculiar tendency to grow and grow. These certified organic cotton T-shirts from When I Grow Up I Will are designed to inspire young wearers with guiding principles. Although they are fully biodegradable, these are the sort of pieces that get passed down from one child to the next, which makes them the ultimate in ecofashion. (more…)

For new and expectant parents, the pickings have been slim in the past in terms of anything organic that’s bright white for babies. Natural, yes. White, not quite.

But now, one of the best companies for soft, organic baby garments and blankets, NatureBaby, based in New Zealand, has come out with an “oxygen white” created with certified organic standards and using a safe oxygen whitener method. Closet of Eden

This post may seem like eco-nepotism, but I assure you that you will not be disappointed if you make a pilgrimage to Eden’s Green Closet, the enviro-kid outpost owned and operated by my little sister, Emily. It’s located on Abbot Kinney, the hip part of Venice, where people are conscious and conscientious
about their tread on the earth (home of the green luxury beauty shop, Vert, see our past post). The store combines the principles of recycling and reuse with organic fashion.
