Protecting our children is the most important job of every parent. We try—albeit sometimes in vain—to shield them from all of life’s harsh realities. When they’re babies, shielding their delicate skin from harmful chemicals tops our list of priorities. Mothers everywhere will swoon over the organic baby care from Miessence. (more…)

Reaching for a Cuter Stool

Sometimes kids need a little bit of help reaching just about anything; the world just isn’t quite built to their height specifications. Good that the colorful Astronomer Stool from QCollection Junior is at their service. These handy stools also double as seating. And at a summer discount (25% off $95-$105), they are a great value. In a little size and an even littler one, these proppers are made domestically from locally-sourced and fsc-certified solid aspen, with a non-toxic, water-based finish (so they’re free of VOC health hazards). Super light weight, kids can carry these around easily - so you may want to hide that secret sweet stash a bit further out of reach.

Babies, Here Wee-Go

According to the Chinese (who launched the olympic games at 8:08 on 08/08/08), all the babies born on that illustrious Friday were extra lucky. But we think this new bottle from Babylife makes newborns everywhere pretty darn charmed. Although my friend Gina Pell over at Splendora missed the lucky day, her baby girl, born on 08/11, has a Wee-Go to ensure her first sips are toxin-free. Created without use of bisphenol A, phthalates and PVC, the Wee-Go is made from glass surrounded by a silicone sleeve to protect from breakage. Available in a myriad of cool colors to add panache, the nipples are made from latex-free, food-grade silicon. The whole getup is completely recyclable, making these $18 built-to-last beauties the ultimate in cradle-to cradle.

Teach our Children Well

Long before environmental consciousness made it fashionable, Henry David Thoreau warned to “Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes.” While we adults can get by with a few choice additions each year, our children have a peculiar tendency to grow and grow. These certified organic cotton T-shirts from When I Grow Up I Will are designed to inspire young wearers with guiding principles. Although they are fully biodegradable, these are the sort of pieces that get passed down from one child to the next, which makes them the ultimate in ecofashion. (more…)

Goodbye Tupperware, Hello Kitty

My daughter Zoe inherited many things from me: a love of travel, an adventurous palate and an odd penchant for Hello Kitty memorabilia. I’ve had to soft-pedal my vicarious affection for the feisty feline owing to environmental concerns. Sadly, much of the product line is heavy in phthalates. So you can imagine my delight when I stumbled upon these biodegradable, reusable Hello Kitty cups while I was shopping for back-to-school items.
