A One-Day 101 on Brooklyn Green
Date: September 16, 2008 | Category: Events, Food & Drink, Lifestyle, Stores & Resources

Calling all New Yorkers! If you’re in or around Brooklyn this coming Thursday (September 18th), the 4th Annual Green Brooklyn Event put on by The Center for the Urban Environment will be packing in a full day fair and symposium where attendees can get the lowdown from local experts on socially conscious investing, solarizing one’s building, choosing non-toxic home products (and of course where to buy them), how real urbanites compost, shopping eco-chic, and what New York City is doing to create a more sustainable future. And alongside a farmer’s market will be booths where you can make art from recycled products, catch a film, and more. How we wish we could hop on a plane for this one…we hear algae-based ethenol is coming to airfield everywhere soon. Then we might have gone!
From Birkenstock to Couture - A Panel on Eco Fashion
Date: September 15, 2008 | Category: Beauty, Events, Fashion, Featured, Women
Are eco-friendly clothes and accessories a passing fad, or is fashion on a path to a healthier planet? Tonight the Commonwealth Club will present a panel of experts, including our own Zem Joaquin, who will discuss the attributes and future of the eco-fashion movement. Industry leaders will share their perspectives on the subject. Moderated by Lynda Grose, assistant professor of fashion design at California College of the Arts, the panel will also include the founder and designer for Del Forte Denim, Tierra Forte; Caren Holzman, director of category management for TransFair USA; Maggie Kim, co-founder and designer for oda; and Joslin Van Arsdal, owner of the hip San Francisco eco-fashion boutique Eco Citizen. Some questions that are likely to be addressed include whether eco-fashion is just superficial fashion hype, what factors are driving eco-fashion forward, whether consumers will always have to balance fashion against sustainability and cost, and what factors tend to affect these decisions. Please join us for this exciting conversation!
Location: Temple, 540 Howard Street, San Francisco.
Time: 6 p.m. check-in, program begins at 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. reception and party
Cost: $15 for Commonwealth members, $25 for non-members. Click here for ticket information.
Also know: This program is limited to attendees aged 21 and over.
Treasure this Island
Date: September 12, 2008 | Category: Events, Lifestyle
Yes, Treasure Island (just off the Bay Bridge) popped up all over the green radar with its plans to become an entirely sustainable community. But that will take years, so in the meantime, there’s another eco-reason to kayak over to the treasure of the Bay. The people behind the Treasure Island Music Festival on September 20th & 21st are working heartily to reduce their carbon footprint while staging an awesome music fest with a hot line-up that includes Goldfrapp, Tegan and Sara, Hot Chip, TV on the Radio and 25 more.
Biodiesel generators. A carbon offset option for ticket buyers ($1). Bauer’s zero-emission buses shuttling from AT&T Park to Treasure Island in style - their entire bus fleet utilizes advanced engine technologies and ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel to minimize environmental impact. Recycled napkins, paper towels, and toilet paper throughout the event make this one eco-lovin’ free love party.
Last year, 72% (9.2 tons) of the waste was diverted to recycling and composting. This year, they’re striving higher. So if you go, try to help them reach their goal.

If a few mouse clicks were all it took to contribute to efforts aimed at eradicating human trafficking and that just happened to benefit the environment, would you seize the opportunity to do such good? Well, said chance is upon you. The Members Project from American Express intends to grant $2.5 million dollars to the top-voted orgs among the 1,190 who have entered.
The ecofab nomination is the joint venture between Architecture for Humanity and Lulan Artisans, so that they might develop off-the-grid weaving cooperatives as an alternative to the sex trade in South Asia. And in doing so, producing beautiful, sustainable textiles. They’re 80 votes shy from making the top 25. By simply casting your vote, you will help launch this beautiful initiative into action. Just Good Green Fun
Date: August 21, 2008 | Category: Events, Lifestyle
If you live in the Bay Area (if you don’t, keep an eye out for events in your area - they are on their way), mark your calendars and purchase your tickets. On September 13th, the Just Green benefit in Mill Valley will be raising glasses of organic (perhaps biodynamic) wine to honor seven incredible green devotees with the Mt. Tamalpais Award. They’ll be serving up some of the finest sustainable fare from local celebrated chefs hailing from eaterys like Millenium, Fish and Small Sheds Flatbreads (among others). Of course, our favorite purveyors of Acai libations, Veev, will be the night’s mixologists. The illuminating evening will benefit Search for the Cause, a non-profit devoted to cancer awareness. Teens for Safe Cosmetics is the daughter of this organically growing organization, so come to learn, to honor or just to get a healthy makeover.

Good Vino from Mendocino
Date: August 15, 2008 | Category: Events, Food & Drink, Lifestyle, Travel & Leisure
The vinic verdict is in: Bonterra Vineyards of Mendocino county, California, tempts lips with certified organic wines at prices that are very palatable. Eschewing synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, they’ve adopted unconventional, innovative viticulture techniques-such as releasing their free-range chickens to comb the farm for undesirable insects and cutworms (the ethical eggs are an added bonus). The labels are printed with soy ink on recycled paper and the bottles are at least 50 percent recycled glass. Organic oenophiles rejoice.
