Halloween: The 2012 ecofabulous Guide

Who doesn’t fall under the spell of the treat-seeking superheroes, princesses, and goblins that gleefully buzz doorbells across the U.S. once October 31 rolls around? It’s a big holiday in many ways, especially when it comes to spending: Americans are on track to shell out close to $8 billion in 2012 alone. (Boo!) This year, help make Halloween a little more green — and a little less frightening for the environment — with sustainable costumes, better-for-you sweets, and easy ideas from our 2012 ecofabulous guide to the spookiest day of the year.

Cue Up the Costumes:
Costumes are hands down the most important decision of the night! Start by checking out what you have at home (old clothing and a little creativity can always go a long way). The next best option? Buy used. Scour your local thrift store, participate in a costume swap, or hit eBay for some smart options. Just remember to tick the “used” box when you search.
High Flyin’:
Send your super little man or favorite fairy off to enjoy the evening’s festivities in a cape from Sarah’s Silks made from renewable silk and non-toxic dyes. Bonus: They’re perfect for playing dress-up after the big night is over ($29.95).
Under the Hood:
Be part of the kids’ trick-or-treating without having to go full-on costume by wrapping this organic cotton red-hooded cape around your shoulders and grabbing a basket (you know, for extra candy and all). It will keep you warmer, plus it’ll be easy to bust out again next year ($95.00).
Crowning Glory:
Her majesty will adore this glittery limited-edition black and neon orange crown. The adjustable headpiece is worthy of any smart queen or king: it’s hand-cut from eco-friendly felt made from 100% recycled plastic bottles ($6.50).
Might & Mane:
Watch your baby bear (or lion — take your pick) roar up and down the neighborhood in a costume cap made with organic cotton yarn and super-soft merino wool ($68.00).
Holy Halloween, Batman:
Fair Trade and knitted from soft, luxurious natural fiber from baby alpacas (a renewable resource that’s also hypoallergenic), this over-the-eyes hat and mask combo can keep batmen and batgirls warm and ready for action on Halloween and beyond (starting at $48.00).
Double-Duty Dino:
We love the idea of a costume that’s also a winter coat, like this adorably roar-worthy Cheeky Green Dinosaur. Equipped with soft felt claws and teeth, a ridged hood, back, and tail, and a quilted tummy panel, it’s crafted from a wool-blend felt and interlined with poly fleece ($155.00).
Outfox ‘em All:
This cunning fox costume is smartly made from felt. Plus, the fluffy tail gets some support on the sly from stuffing that uses re-purposed, clean plastic bags ($30.59).
Monster Mash:
When they’re finally crashing from their sugar high, put little ghouls and ghosts down for bed in Stella McCartney’s organic cotton jersey footie with a spooky-cute print that glows in the dark ($80.00).
Make Up For It:
In partnership with GreenHalloween.org, Ecomom offers a non-toxic, natural face paint kit that’s free from lead and dye, allowing you to create creepy faces with color that’s anything but ($24.99).
I Want Candy:
A fun mix of sweet and icky, these natural gummy worms are made with organic sweeteners — and without all the spooky corn syrup found in conventional candy crawlers ($1.99).
In the Bag:
The classic taste combo no Halloween reveler can resist — chocolate + peanut butter — gets a better-for-you spin with these Organic Peanut Butter Cups from Justin’s ($29.95).
Chew on This:
Start a new trick-or-treat tradition: Sub in these delish gluten- and dairy-free organic caramels for the old-school waxy, corn-syrupy types that used to fill your treat bowl ($12.00).
Sweet on You:
Made with certified organic cacao and agave nectar — and without dairy or animal products — NibMor’s Daily Dose of Dark is an easy way to pass out chocolate you (and your neighbors with kids) can feel good about ($36.50 for 60).
On the Good Ship:
Organic lollipops? Yes, please! YumEarth Organics’ pops come in flavors like razzmatazz berry, wet-face watermelon, and too berry blueberry, plus they’re gluten-free, made without artificial dyes or flavors, and contain 100% of your daily vitamin C ($7.99 for 40+ pops).
No Bones About It:
Three different flavors of ghoulishly good — and gluten-free — chocolate skulls on a stick from Vosges honor the sugar skulls (“calaveritas” in Spanish) traditionally used to celebrate El Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead ($3.50).
Give a Hoot:
Make handing out candy or party favors a breeze with these 4″x6″ organic cotton muslin bags. We might be biased, but how cute is that hand-stamped owl? ($39.00 for a set of 30).
