On Your Toes
Something’s fabulously afoot at Schier Shoes, makers of velskoen or “vellies,” the ancestor of the desert boot. From its Herbert Schier workshop in the coastal town of Swakopmund, Namibia, a small group of eight Damara men assemble each and every shoe by hand, turning out just 20 pairs in an afternoon. Made from amazingly durable Kudu leather and suede, each shoe is vegetable-dyed in a traditional way — resulting in a timeless look with a modern twist. Case in point: these eye-popping Neon Toe Cap Shoes ($235). Interested? Walk this way: schiershoes.com.
