Hot Shoes, Smaller Carbon Footprint
Average thought process when strapping on your stylish kicks: Will said shoes achieve desired effect for the night’s outfit? What are the chances of serious blisters during the expected 10 block walk? How do these sexy heels effect the environment around me? Chances are that last one didn’t make it into the standard fashion questionnaire - but with the livestock/leather industry as one of the largest contributors to global warming, it’s time we took a look at the toll our fancy feet are having on the ground we walk upon. Thankfully Coclico’s retracing steps make it easy to pair style and sustainability for a look that truly walks the talk.
Following three generations of shoemakers, Coclico’s Sandra Canselier naturally fell into a role of producing everlasting, artful creations. And when she teamed up with seasoned designer, Lisa Nadig, the result led to a line of high style and true comfort within the context of sustainability. Coclico successfully incorporates many eco-friendly practices without compromising the top priority - seriously sexy shoes. The increasing use of veggie tanned leather (nearly 75% of the collection), FSC-certified wood and cork, and strict utilization of lead and nickel-free hardware prove a firm commitment to eco-progress. And for the footprints they do leave, Coclico offsets the impact by using local materials whenever possible and by purchasing carbon credits from Native Energy.
The girls attest they are strongly committed to searching for more sustainable materials and methods of doing business, believing that to “philosophize about truly good design, our work can’t end with a shoe.”
