Going Postal - Read All About It

I keep reading in books, oops, yes books, that forests are disappearing at an alarming rate. So why am I still buying books to read about it? That is precisely why ecofabulous is constantly on the lookout for alternatives to traditional page-flipping. We recently featured the revolutionary Kindle but there are still people who cannot fathom giving up the feel and even the smell of books (that olfactory arouser happens to be glues and inks, but since its been around longer than that new car smell, it will be more challenging to retrain our brains). BookSwim to the rescue. Quite simply, it’s like Netflix for books. Starting at $19.99 per month, you rent books online as you would movies. With over 30,000 titles to choose from, no late fees and no additional shipping costs, BookSwim might be an excellent personal solution. Unless, of course, you are like some of us with children who take a couple of months to complete a single title. In that case, you might want to think about going to a library. Yeah, those things are still around!

As a librarian I find this concept offensive. You pay taxes to have a library in your community, a service that is then free to you. Yes, there are overdue fees, around a whopping $0.10 to $0.25 a day. What the f*** is wrong with people that they can’t leave their house for a half hour and go to the library? In all honesty, I think it is very irresponsible for Ecofabulous to encourage the use this service. And BTW, most libraries have a service where they will send a book to your home for a small fee. How about you support your local libraries instead of another service designed to keep us in our houses, and not communicate with the outside world.

“Yeah, those things are still around!”

What? Instead of relegating libraries as a thing of the past, why not advocate people use them more? I’d say they’re more green than this for-profit book lending service (ie, every book will be shipped to you using this service, while most people have libraries near to their homes and can check out multiple books at once… FOR FREE)

I believe there is an alternative that you are most likely paying for already with your tax dollars. It is called a library. For heaven’s sake, do not rent your books, borrow them! Unbelievable!

Wow, we were being sarcastic (as you might notice we often are) when we said those things are still around. We completely agree that using a library is a viable solution, but think it is beneficial for our readers to know what is out there. Thanks for the feedback. Glad so many people still frequent libraries…we certainly do!
