From Junk to Jewels
Date: September 2, 2008 | Category: Fashion, Jewelry

You know you’ve got a pile of unworn baubles - single studs, gifts from your ex you’d rather never see again, and purchases that seemed right at the time but turned out to be oh so wrong. Through September 11th, the Bay Area Radical Jewelry Makeover is soliciting your undesirable wearables for students to recycle into unique, handmade pieces. This nationwide program runs under the tutelage of the Ethical Metalsmiths, who raise awareness about dirty mining and promote ethical bling. And the Bay Area will host their largest event to date. Apt, since the Bay is lined with several feet of sediment from hydraulic gold mining that took place more than a century ago, and the waters are contaminated with dangerous levels of mercury as a result (according to E.M.).
Post donation: Want to see your old pieces in action? They’re slated for exhibition and sale October 22–November 9 at Velvet da Vinci in San Francisco.

I’ve taken old necklaces apart and mixed them up and restrung them with great success. It’s also simple to take a single earring and put it on a chain for a necklace. Simple simple solutions that look gorgeous!

Dear EcoFabulous,
Thank you for posting information about Radical Jewelry Makeover to this blog! We have extended the donation deadline to this coming Monday - Sept. 15th! And there are still opportunities to join in on this collaborative, community effort. Check out the Radical Jewelry Makeover blog for a list of San Francisco locations near your. Scintillant, the Crucible and the Richmond Art Center still have spaces available.
All the best and thanks again!
