Food & Drink, Shop Talk:
Much Ado About Muffins
Whether non-native or longtime resident, trekking across the streets of New York often induces sensory overload. In the West Village, amidst the flurry of taxi cabs, foot traffic, and stretches of visually-enticing boutiques, lies Birdbath, a nondescript storefront that touts itself as the “Neighborhood Green Bakery.”
Unlike certain popular coffee shop chains, Birdbath is rarely, if ever, overcrowded with wired Wi-Fi patrons. Instead, you’ll find a handful of peaceful locals reading the morning paper as they sip organic coffee out of biodegradable corn cups. The cozy eco-sanctuary is built from recycled paper countertops, reclaimed wood floors, and, in line with their sweeping green-consciousness, they reward customers who arrive by bicycle with a 25% discount. Blink and you’ll miss the Village gem, but you would be remiss to stop by the neighborhood and not sample a perfectly moist raspberry bran muffin.
Located at 145 Seventh Avenue South at Charles Street.
