Food & Drink, San Francisco:
Sweet Sereni-tea
Tea has been a controversial commodity throughout history, but a sip of Samovar’s certified organic blends of bliss has the potential to win world peace.
We had the privilege of tasting both the Blood Orange Pu-erh, a woodsy, spicy tea ideal for aiding digestion and promoting heart health ($18), and our favorite, the Nocturnal Bliss Herbal Blend, a sweet, lemony medley that goes really well with honey ($18).
Herbal blends are suitable for those who don’t tolerate caffeine well but who want to reap the benefits of the “organic and fair trade herbs, spices, roots, leaves, seeds, and flowers from all over the world.” Lucky for us, ecofabulous HQ is in San Francisco, within easy access to the Samovar lounges (do stop by if you’re in town!).
The tea is not packed uniformly into a conventionally boring bag—it comes loose, ready for scooping into a strainer. To sweeten the pot, reach for the Sweet Samovar Crystals ($18 for 14 oz.) made from coconut palm nectar, a great alternative to refined sugar. For tea-tasting parties or for your own familiarization, Samovar offers an ingredient list, flavor profile, tea story, and food pairing suggestions for each tea (it’s not our fault we were instructed to pair with chocolate dipped strawberries!). If you’re a tea aficionado/a, you’ll appreciate the “Samovarian poetry,” a more esoteric description of the tea’s flavor. Steeped in the idea that the ultimate goal in life is love and sharing it with those closest to us, Samovar seeks to connect people with a cup of tea, and with a hot beverage this good, there’s no reason to be tea’d off. Bottoms up!
