Green Building:
Rain, Rain, Go Away
We’re all keeping a tight rein on our water usage, though for most of us, the thought of harvesting rainwater as an urban dweller seems nearly impossible. But Sydney-based architect, Sally Dominguez, has designed the Rainwater HOG, a modular water storage unit small enough for us city folks.
The Rainwater HOG can be installed vertically or horizontally (great under decks and in narrow passages), holding up to 51 gallons of rainwater, collected via a downspout attached to the roof. Made of food grade plastic, the modular structure is entirely recyclable and should you need more storage, simply add another hog. At $350-465 per unit (depending on the extra accessories), the initial cost will easily be recouped over time as you can wash your car and water your plants without adding to your utility bill – not to mention the added savings for the planet.
Water is a precious commodity these days. Install a Rainwater HOG and rest assured that, whether rain comes again another day soon or not, you’ll be able to tap into your own personal storage – an updated version of the “rainy day fund.”
