2010 Eco Holiday Guide: Wrapping & Cards

Once you’ve figured out the gifts, it’s time to adorn them with pretty paper and a festive card. With as much as half of the 85 million tons of paper products used each year in America going to packaging, wrapping, and decorating consumer goods, this year, choose from the many stylish options of recycled and tree-free wrapping. Or if you’re feeling crafty, make your own wrap using old magazines – this way you can customize the design for the recipient, while cutting down on your use of new materials. When it comes to conscious cards, we’re pretty sure we’ve rounded up the best of the bunch! Take a look and commit to making this holiday totally ecofabulous:

Anne Taintor Cards:
These sassy seasonal cards are printed on FSC-certified paper, using veggie based inks, plus the plant is run on 100% wind-generated electricity. With lines like, “the mistletoe wasn’t the only thing that was going to get hammered,” they’re sure to add a little spice ($25 for box set of 10).
Kornflake Cards:
What happens when you combine a love of letterpress printing with an admiration for cereal box packaging? Kornflake cards. These unique beauties are made from empty breakfast cereal boxes, sourced from local schools (10 pk £7.50)
Sycamore Street Press:
All Sycamore Street paper is either 100% recycled or 100% cotton (using waste from the garment industry), and inks are non-toxic and soy-based. This card ($4.50) reads: “All I want for Christmas is you (If you’re holding a bunch of presents that are also for me).
Fugu Fugu Press:
Printed on recycled paper with soy-based inks, Fugu Fugu Press makes some of the cutest holiday cards we’ve seen. The blue joy gnomes card has cute little guys lines up to celebrate, or opt for little chestnuts characters you’ll never want to roast on an open fire ($18 for pack of 6).
Tree Free SweetPaper Cards:
Made of 50% Sugar cane bagasse (a waste product of the sugar refining industry) and 50% recycled fiber, these tree-free cards are a sweeter alternative than Saccharin (box set $11-$16).
Slide Sideways:
Slide Sideways products are made from organic, natural fabrics using water-based inks (they even use eco-friendly products when cleaning the screen-printer). Paper goods are printed on 100% recycled, 80% post-consumer paper and packaging material is recycled as much as possible. We’re in love with this “winter ride” card - just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you should leave your bike behind ($4.50).
Goods For Good E-Cards:
Goods for Goods matches excess goods with the needs of orphans and vulnerable children. When you send an e-card, you also make a donation (that gets matched) and therefore your greeting will also be providing a better future for a child in need (donations may vary).

Fish Lips Paper Designs:
Printed in the USA on 100% recycled paper with soy-based inks, we absolutely adore the funky bold prints from Fish Lips - especially the “chilly dogs” and “oh deer” ($4 per sheet).
Seltzer Goods Sleigh Paper:
A long time ecofab favorite, Seltzer Goods light-hearted yet luxurious recycled paper wrapping is printed in Canada using veggie based inks ($3.25 per sheet).
