Good for the Sole

The offices of ecofabulous are constantly inundated by companies trying to bamboozle us into recommending their green products, but we needed no convincing to feature Teragren, whose stunning bamboo flooring we want to shout about from the rooftops.

Beautiful, sustainable and durable, bamboo is the perfect choice in even the highest-traffic areas of your home. The flooring is made from moso bamboo, which is known for its density and remarkable tensile strength. In fact, the material is so strong that it has been used in the construction of buildings, bridges and scaffolds for centuries. Better yet, bamboo is a highly-renewable material, which helps reduce our reliance on our planet’s dwindling timber resources.

In addition to floors, the company also make stair parts, veneers and butcher block-style countertops out of bamboo, all of which are available in a variety of styles and finishes.

And there is a bonus: The material is far cheaper than the average hardwood floor making it an economical choice as well as a beautiful one.

My first thought was to investigate *where* the bamboo comes from, and then *what* kinds of adhesives do they use in installation.
According to:
http://www.teragren.com/environmental.html
The bamboo is grown in China, but they do “require” that the growers only harvest mature grasses which make for better, stronger material, and creates more renewable cycles of growth that early harvest grasses.
As well, they outline that use LEED certified adhesives that have less-than-allowed formaldehyde content.
*IF* what they claim is true (I wonder about their oversight with the Chinese companies that ship to them), then this company certainly “checks out” as far as being a sustainable alternative.
Unfortunately, this is *not* true of a lot of bamboo flooring companies who are causing more environmental damage through bad harvesting practices and toxic glues for installation.
