Kitchen Confidential:

I Am Not A Paper Cup

paper-cup-silicone-lid

Forgot your reusable coffee cup again? We all make excuses based on our “pre-caffeine stupor” but take a minute and try out this coffee waste calculator to see just how much your daily habit can add up.

In ditching the disposable cup, plastic reusable coffee mugs are a start in that you are reducing your overall morning waste, but similar to our earlier discussion regarding plastic storage containers, the chemicals in plastics can cause a real issue for ritual caffeine addicts (not to mention the damage to the environment during production). BPA for example, used to make plastics flexible and durable, is a known hormone disruptor and has been linked to cancer, diabetes, and early onset puberty. Studies have now confirmed that BPA can liquefy and leach out when subjected to high temperatures… um, hot coffee anyone?

Food-grade stainless steel is a good option, though sometimes it can get too hot to hold, and it’s not the best choice for microwaves. The “I Am Not A Paper Cup” is made with a double wall of porcelain and has a silicone lid, so it’s comfortable to hold, and you can reheat that cup as much as you’d like without any concern for the additional surprises that may end up in your morning java jolt.

At just under $20, the humorous impression, “I Am Not A Paper Cup,” is the perfect reason to ditch the disposable habit for good.

Great reminder for all of us! I am guilty of forgetting my reusable cups on occasion. I really hate that I can’t reheat my stainless steel ones and try to avoid plastic. I saw the “I Am Not A Paper Cup” at Whole Foods and think I might have to give it a try!

This is great and I didn’t think it existed. It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for (boo to plastic)! Thank you.
