Vivanista’s Interview with Ecofabulous’ Nadine Weil

Vivanista recently caught up with the eco-conscious (and totally ecofabulous) Nadine Weil, co-chair of the SF annual Gorgeous & Green Gala benefitting Global Green USA.

Describe the upcoming Gorgeous & Green Fundraiser… What makes the event unique?

Gorgeous & Green is our annual bash in San Francisco for Global Green USA. With fellow co-chair Zem Joaquin, our mission is to show that eco-consciousness can be the ultimate in glamour, high performance, and fun. The gala features a runway fashion show, star musicians, a patron dinner, a rocking cocktail party, living walls, goodies from the top sustainable companies in the country, and a crowd of glamorous guests of course! It is all for a good cause – to raise money for Global Green’s initiatives to green schools, affordable housing, and neighborhoods in the Bay Area and nationwide. A green school is a healthy school.

This is the 6th year of Gorgeous & Green. What makes the fundraiser a success each year, and what have you added/changed to keep it fresh?

Each year we try to top ourselves. This year, we are designing Gorgeous & Green to be Mad Men-inspired, eco-extravaganza. Zem and I have always coveted vintage gowns, so we decided we wanted to share our love of vintage with the community. Led by Lily Achatz and Clarissa Nicosia, this year’s fashion show will include an ode to the 1950s and 1960s with looks from top vintage boutiques. After all, the most eco-friendly choice is a reincarnated one. Plus, the construction of these designer gowns from decades past is extraordinary.

We are also carrying the Mad Men theme into the Gorgeous & Green décor designed by Kimberly Rider Interiors with support by Blueprint Studios. Kimberly has been searching the best antique stores in the city like Coup d’Etat for sensational mid-century chairs, settees, and the famous Mad Men desk. I am excited about the living walls from Design Ecology that will be flanking the runway this year. A vertical garden is such a perfect concept for city living. I am also proud of our team and that we are a target zero waste event with a landfill diversion rate of over 80%.

Why did you choose Global Green as your benefactor? How does the event align with Global Green’s overall mission and contribution to the community?

Global Green’s mission is to create a global value shift toward a secure and sustainable future. They work on systematic change, and they are also first responders. We are all stewards of our planet and each other, now and for future generations. Ultimately, we hope guests at Gorgeous & Green will be inspired and say, “Wow, I didn’t realize that an eco-conscious lifestyle could be so fabulous, or rather so ecofabulous!” We make a difference every day through the choices that we make. Going green can enhance your life to the fullest.
