What’s the Word?
The Lexicon of Sustainability takes us back to our (organic) roots: learning the meaning behind words in order to understand and communicate ideas. That’s because this always-growing language/photography project recognizes that “people can’t be expected to live more sustainable lives if they don’t actually know the most basic terms and principles that define sustainability.” Founded three years ago by eco-minded husband-and-wife team Douglas Gayeton and Laura Howard-Gayeton, the lexicon gets its definitions from the foremost practitioners in sustainable food and farming (think Alice Waters on edible schoolyards, Temple Grandin on the humane slaughter of animals, and Farmer John on community-supported agriculture). The project has grown to include short films, study guides, traveling shows, a book, and, most recently, a gorgeous 2013 calendar (2012 was so popular it sold out). Available for $24.49, the just-released edition features innovative thinkers like Paul Stamets on “Mycoremediation,” Growing Power Chicago on the “Compost Circuit,” Michael Ableman on “Beyond Organic” and more.
