Advice from Auntie Flo

Riding the crimson wave. Time of the month. A visit from Auntie Flo. Whatever you call it, you know what we’re talking about. Each month you go through the same process – painful cramps, making sure you’re stocked, the thought of having to wear a swimsuit. The last thing you want to worry about is pesticides, but we’re sorry to say my friends, they’re used in products for down there as well.

Aside from the pesticide-ridden cotton, conventional feminine products also contain plastic, synthetic fibers and chlorine bleaching residuals (like dioxin, a known carcinogen). But healthier alternatives abound for the expected 11,000 disposable pads and tampons a woman will use in her lifetime. Natracare offers certified organic cotton tampons with and without applicators that are chlorine-free and have no additives, perfumes or plastics. Additionally, the Natracare line is between 90% and 100% biodegradable and compostable – and since over 45 billion sanitary pads are disposed of each year (most of them made with toxic, synthetic materials) you’ll be doing your part to green your system and the ecosystem.

You can find Natracare products at many health food stores or purchase them online in bulk - they are often less expensive than their conventional counterpart! Anything that’s close to some of the most absorbent tissue in your body, and the area that houses all your reproductive organs, should be organic and free of harmful chemicals. Period.

How about skipping packaged products all together and go for a Luna Cup, Diva Cup, or Keeper?

  • Morgan

I second Jennifer’s sentiment. Why not skip disposables all together and go for reusable products like the DivaCup or washable cloth pads. There are a lot more options out there for women interested in “greening” their period. Check out http://www.lunapads.com

those are great options too! do they work well?

The diva cup is the best thing that has happened to me since starting my period! It will change your life :)

I use both the DivaCup and 100% organin cotton reusable washable Luna Pads. I absolutely love them and would NEVER go back to diposable, plastic, diaper-like pads that cause rashes and retain odor. The cotton pads are thin and comfortable under clothing too. The DivaCup is amazing because I don’t have to worry about stocking and restocking my purse with noisy, bulky pad and tampon packages. The cup is comfortable and clean feeling too. This is truly the greenest way to go to reduce waste and take better care of my body.
