It Came from the Sea
Made from plastic recovered from our oceans, The Sea Chair is a modern throne of Neptune. The brains behind the unusual piece are Studio Swine and Kieren Jones, designers in the UK who have concocted special devices that can collect, mold, and press marine debris in order to transform it into this unbelievably upcycled series of stools. Launched at this year’s Milan Furniture Fair 2012, it is a simple yet haunting statement made about the way our rapidly growing world consumes products and its affect on the planet’s oceans and waterways — especially since our oceans now contain some 100 million tons of plastic. Check out the fascinating story behind its production, as well at the designers’ intent for the chairs themselves, at studioswine.com.
