Though not necessarily celebrated for its chicness, the spork was a stroke of functional genius. The combo fork and spoon that is a staple of any cafeteria was obviously overdue for an eco makeover. (more…)

Protecting our children is the most important job of every parent. We try—albeit sometimes in vain—to shield them from all of life’s harsh realities. Babies, Here Wee-Go
Date: August 19, 2008 | Category: Care, Featured, Kids

According to the Chinese (who launched the olympic games at 8:08 on 08/08/08), all the babies born on that illustrious Friday were extra lucky. But we think this new bottle from Babylife makes newborns everywhere pretty darn charmed. Although my friend Gina Pell over at Splendora missed the lucky day, her baby girl, born on 08/11, has a Wee-Go to ensure her first sips are toxin-free. Created without use of bisphenol A, phthalates and PVC, the Wee-Go is made from glass surrounded by a silicone sleeve to protect from breakage. Available in a myriad of cool colors to add panache, the nipples are made from latex-free, food-grade silicon. The whole getup is completely recyclable, making these $18 built-to-last beauties the ultimate in cradle-to cradle.
Orbit is Out of this World

Despite our growing wisdom about the dangers of phthalates and other harmful chemicals, most children’s strollers, toys and products still contain them. We were delighted to see that Orbit is extending their environmental commitment to the development of a new product line. Their new Green Edition Bassinet Cradle is designed to meet the ever-changing needs of a busy parent (sound like anyone you know?). Effortlessly transitioning from a rocker to a pram, this stylish carrier features a 100% organic cotton interior and a wool exterior, joining excellence in design with sustainability. (more…)
Goodbye Tupperware, Hello Kitty

My daughter Zoe inherited many things from me: a love of travel, an adventurous palate and an odd penchant for Hello Kitty memorabilia. I’ve had to soft-pedal my vicarious affection for the feisty feline owing to environmental concerns. Sadly, much of the product line is heavy in phthalates. So you can imagine my delight when I stumbled upon these biodegradable, reusable Hello Kitty cups while I was shopping for back-to-school items.

Blueberry Bottoms Up!

Margarita McClure thought her baby’s precious bottom deserved to be swaddled in fashionable, earth-friendly threads. Now Margarita’s minky-soft reusable diapers are turning heads all over town. Inspired by the age-old question: “Shouldn’t diapers be as cute as the babies that are wearing them?”—Margarita’s fanciful creations protect the planet and its tender-skinned stakeholders.
Moved by the fact that disposable diapers take up to 500 years to decompose and dump millions of C0 into our endangered ecosphere, Margarita decided to make her adorable designs utterly irresistible. She succeeded. With over 32 colors and prints to choose from, Blueberry Diaper babies can match their mood to their style every day of the month! And while we’d love to see a switch to certified organic, biodegradable fibers, these whimsical diapers go a long way to promoting a healthier child and planet.
Greening your Crib like the Stars

What do Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Sheryl Crow have in common? In addition to stunningly fast metabolisms, they all tuck their babies into Q Collection Junior cribs.
Certified by the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute, Kidman’s baby daughter, Sunday Rose, sleeps in the Solare crib (shown), which, like the rest of the line, meets stringent low-emission standards that protect against dangerous toxins associated with health problems like asthma. Featuring functionally elegant designs and superb craftsmanship, all of Q’s simple, bright furnishings and colorful organic cotton accessories are child-safe and planet-friendly - we’re huge fans of the adorable organic cotton bedding sets (the elephant parade sheets are perfect for parents that want to keep decor relatively gender neutral). A proud member of 1% for the Planet, Q collection Junior contributes a portion of proceeds to environmental causes.
