Long Live the Mixtape!
Date: September 18, 2009 | Category: Lifestyle, Tech

Call us nostalgic, but there was a certain romance to lovingly crafting a cassette tape of our favorite songs to pass along to our best friends, or high school boyfriends, that mp3s just can’t replace. We’d bring them back if we could, but we also know that those compact rectangles can be just as wasteful as burning CD upon CD. Besides, tape players definitely fall in the category of “so 90′s,” along with neon scrunchies and slap bracelets. (more…)
Talk Techie to Me: 4 Ways to Green Your Electronics
Date: September 4, 2009 | Category: Guides, Tech

Much of the convenience of modern-life can be attributed to technology - our gadget-run world means (for better or worse) that we never have to be out of contact with work, family or friends again. We can watch our favorite TV shows whenever and wherever we want. We can wake up to our favorite tune and already have fresh brewed espresso waiting for us. Of course all these luxuries aren’t without a cost. Though many of these advances have gotten less expensive, the amount of energy used for consumer electronics as well as information and communications technologies is estimated to actually triple by 2030 if we don’t take action now.

Waking up all of the Eco-Senses!

Has the green movement got you movin’ to a new tune - recycling, composting, eating organically and buying sustainable products? Well now you can sing to something more sustainable too.
Ecofabulous, design-loving music aficionados everywhere have been overheard coveting the Vers 2X iPod stereo. But it’s the Vers 1.5R radio/alarm clock for iPod that got us out of bed this morning. Designed to deliver maximum sound for its size, the stereo has a retro bamboo exterior cabinet and an energy efficient class D amplifier (between 35-50% more energy efficient). And the 18-function remote allows you to control the tunes, even from across the room.
Also available in cherry, natural walnut and dark walnut (all from sustainably managed forests, of course!), the wood used in each stereo replaces 80% of what would have been plastic. While each Vers 1.5R is finished by hand and takes over a week to build, for just under $200 you can get a sound system that’s as unique and rockin’ as last Friday’s karaoke moves. Santa, in case you are reading this, this would make waking up in the morning a little more appealing…just think about it, ok?
Calling All Recyclers
Date: November 14, 2008 | Category: Events, Lifestyle, Stores & Resources, Tech

Does figuring out how to dispose of your old cell phone responsibly make you want to dial “F” for frustrated?
According to a global consumer survey from Nokia, 44 percent of old mobile phones are lying in drawers at home and not being used, nor recycled. But there is some good news: 20 years ago, only about 1,000 curbside recycling programs existed in the United States; today there are more than 10,000 across the nation. And we can now recycle more products than ever, including our old cell phones. While you can’t put them in the curbside bin just yet, there are programs in place that make it easy to keep them out of the landfill and often getting them in the hands of people who actually NEED them.
In honor of America Recycles Day on November 15th (that’s tomorrow!) we ask that you save a cell phone from a life of neglect or the dreaded trip to a landfill. Call your friends, take the recycling pledge and head to one of the nearly 5,000 recycling drop-off points around the globe. And if you absolutely can’t make it to a center, you can download free postage online and mail your phone. It’ll be worth the trip if you can alter the destiny of just one phone.

Whether you love to camp, or just don’t get around to taking out the recycling until well past sundown, having a reliable flashlight on hand is key. Having one that isn’t a battery hog is just plain smart.
The BoGo flashlight is one-of-a-kind, featuring a solar panel which will juice up rechargeable batteries just by letting the flashlight get some exposure to the sun during the day, and super-bright LED bulbs light up the darkest night. The Bogo charges in 8 hours, and provides 4-5 hours of illumination. It also features a night glow strip, which will help you find your torch when you hear rustling outside in the middle of the night.
Plus, when you buy a BoGo flashlight, the company will donate one to someone in need, allowing you to light up your own life and someone else’s for just $49.
