Fresh Starts

Getting ready for a new baby requires a lot of prep time, especially since you’re suddenly looking for everything from baby gear to decor for your nursery to still-cute clothing for your changing body. And while a lot of searching (and researching) goes into the things you know you’ll need in the immediate, we also recommend reading up on something that comes around sooner than you think: what to feed your little one when it’s time to shift to solids (and beyond).

Enter Catherine McCord. She’s the brain behind Weelicious.com, one of our go-to sites for spot-on suggestions for easy homemade baby food, toddler food, and recipes for the whole gang. This culinary school grad and mom to son Kenya and daughter Chloe scours farmer’s markets for seasonal produce, promotes healthy, organic eating, and even grows her own organic garden. Her recipes, which please even the pickiest of eaters, begin with ideas for kiddos age six months and up. A good place to start testing your hand at creating her smart, simple baby foods? Check out her Spice Carrot and Rice Puree recipe. It uses wholesome ingredients, is a cinch to make, and was posted in honor of Pregnancy Awareness Month. Delish.

It can be challenging to figure out what is wholesome and appropriate for your little one, especially if it is your first, but by the third time around I simply realized it’s not as complicated as I once thought. As long as I’m cooking healthy food for our family, be it soup or a vegetable/meat medley, a casserole of some sort, or whatever, I can mash it all up or blend it for a few seconds. This way everyone benefits and you’re inspired to cook healthier for the whole family.
