Shampooing Made Simple

Cleaning your roots and crown may not be a difficult job, but when you consider all the hard-to-pronounce, unknown toxins in your favorite drugstore brand, it’s easy to get tangled up in chemical confusion. That’s why Simply Organic created a line of shampoos, conditioners and styling products made with fewer, pure ingredients designed to address and improve a variety of hairy situations. If you wash and condition daily, we recommend the Everyday Shampoo ($28) and Conditioner ($30), formulated to gently cleanse, repair, and protect all hair types with several certified organic extracts like olive, vanilla, and Japanese honeysuckle. Have your locks gone limp? Try the Volume Treatment ($24) after cleansing for professionally pumped-up results. If winter and wanton flat iron/blow out use can has your tresses dried out, check out the Split Ends Treatment and Bangs and Ends Crème (both $24) to keep your most visibly sultry strands solid. Finish any flirty style with the silicone-free Shine Spray ($26) to maintain long-lasting luster. As hair care woes change, whether color retention or a dry scalp, preening shouldn’t be a complex or painful process. Allow Simply Organics to cover your hair through the thick of it.

Keep It Brief

You need a stylish method of transporting your laptop, and that ill-fitting, non-eco-friendly satchel is showing serious wear. How’s a girl to get from Point A to Point Be Sustainable?

Plaid Doctrine, a company devoted to crafting environmentally-smart and sexy bags manufactured entirely in the USA, has the answer: a chicly crafted briefcase ($449) with outer fabric made from recycled bottles (it’s both water and stain-resistant), and vegetable-tanned leather trim. In a classic houndstooth pattern, the case is ideal for a 17” screen, and measures 12” wide and 4” deep to hold extra folders, notepads, or day planners inside, which is lined with recycled, rip-stop nylon.

Travel much? You can easily slip the briefcase’s back pocket over your rolling luggage’s handle. If carrying a smaller screen, check out the 12”x15”x3” Eco Laptop Tote ($449), with adjustable length handles and expandable main compartment for last minute magazine stand purchases.

Love Notes

Modernize the moonlight serenade by wearing your heart on your sleeve…or down the back of your shoulder. These visually stunning t-shirts by eco-friendly clothing company Recession deftly reflect the melody that’s in your heart—and since it takes two, their Valentine’s Day Duet sets ($65 for her, $75 for him) are fabulously fitting for you and your fella. Made from surplus fabric from industry overproduction and printed with water-based inks, these 100% handmade white tees come accompanied by an adorably contrasting set of black cotton lycra unmentionables (the ladies’ are lace-trimmed, the gentlemen’s with elastic) with matching beautifully chaotic music notes. Not quite all you need to execute the ultimate Valentine’s Day? As a bonus, Recession also includes a CD of covered love songs from band Get Better to set the mood, and will wrap each set with old cassette tape ribbon. If you prefer more traditional V-Day symbolism, we guarantee the special girl in your life (and that includes yourself!) will be shot to the heart when she sees the Arrow Fletch design on either the understated, romantic chocolate brown/off-white tank and panty set ($65) or the French Terry Sweatshirt Dress ($82), which is printed before sewn to maximize the surprising arrows’ positioning. Stupid Cupid, keep picking on me!

One Good Chair Competition: Doing More with Less

“Doing more with less,” while “celebrating abundance,” that’s how One Good Chair 2010 describes the aim of sustainability.

RE_Flex Chair by Juan Mercado

A competition that prompts designers to submit a lounge chair design concept to addresses material conservation, physical comfort and emotional resonance, One Good Chair is out to find the design that can "both preserve natural resources and amplify human delight."

Zpine Lounge Chair by Eric Tong

Ecofabulous’ own sustainable design guru and founder, Zem Joaquin, will be on the competition judges panel alongside green experts Summer Rayne Oakes, Kira Gould, Shashi Caan and Sarah Backhouse.

The Elxe Chair by Pitt Berkemeyer & Georg Thesing

Judges will evaluate each chair design’s ability to solve problems like: How can shape optimize resources in design, fabrication, and shipping? What is the intersection of sustainability and sensuality? How can shape aid the body in the act of sitting?

Broom Chair by Baita Design Studio

Want to get involved? You can also be the judge of each design. One Good Chair’s People’s Choice lets you vote for your favorite among these innovative designs. Leave a comment below and let us know who you picked! Winners will be announced on January 26, 2011 at the World Market in Las Vegas, NV.

Dark and Stormy

Green fashion, as proven by Ashton Michael Spring 2011 line, doesn’t have to be cute or sweet. Tattoos, dramatic makeup and a distinctive rock ‘n roll-goes-Japanese feel makes this unisex collection feel fashion forward and dark. We love that a lot of the looks can be used by men and women - one line for many means less waste, more energy efficient production, and the chance to borrow clothes from a wider group of friends. Ashton Michael teamed with Seattle-based Rethink Sustainable Solution Group for his collection, made from recycled PET, bamboo, organic cotton and coconut. When you’re ready to check out clothes from the man who’s dressed everyone from Britney Spears to the Black Eyed Peas, visit an Ashton Michael showroom for purchase. *Photo credit: Elisa Hyman

Affordable Green Inspiration from the Golden Globes

Best and worst dressed lists have been popping up everywhere following the Golden Globes 2011. And while we give top props to Livia Firth in Prophetik's peace silk gown, we couldn't help but wonder - what about a look-a-like fashion list that is both fabulous and eco-conscious? We thought you'd never ask. Here are a few vintage finds that mimic the stars’ Golden Globe red carpet attire. Lightly worn vintage clothing will look good-as-new, and wearing it is as healthy for your budget as it is for the environment. Copy Julia Stiles’ ruffle detail with this one-shoulder LBD. This asymmetrical party dress has a similar ruffled collar, and priced at only $58! Get Claire Danes high halter and low-back look with this slinky black cocktail dress ($40). January Jones wore a revealing red dress with dramatic cut-outs. Try this look with a little less exposed skin, thought equally as dramatic with this 1950's Femme Fatale dress ($24). To copy Rachel Zoe’s deep v-neck with sheer panels, try this deep v-neck cocktail dress with a lace inset ($46). Don’t forget to accessorize! These art Deco earrings, like Elisabeth Moss’ chandelier drops, will make you sparkle for only $8!
