Women of all ages have an affinity for sweet-smelling candles. The mood-setters are hands-down the most inexpensive way to soothe your senses and brighten your day. But make sure you’re infusing the right kind of “essence” - conventional candles are made from petroleum-based paraffin (inherently non-renewable) and emit soot containing known carcinogens and neurotoxins - the same that’s let off by diesel fuel! Lookiloos.com and Scene Magazine recently teamed up to profile ecofabulous founder, Zem Joaquin. The story (written by Julia Prodis Sulek) is a fascinating look into Zem’s life and unveils everything from her 1970 upbringing on a Palo Alto commune called “The Land,” playing with chickens, dancing in the central longhouse and singing with Joan Baez in the squatters camp off Page Mill Road, to the serendipitous path that led her to being the authoritative voice in making green glamorous.
