Hello Bright Eyes

Mark Twain once said that you can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus. Twain would have loved KAYU, a company that has pinpointed its imagination on a single goal: eliminating preventable blindness for those in the developing world.

KAYU, which launched just last week to correspond with World Sight Day, produces hand-crafted bamboo sunglasses. The company has teamed up with the non-profit organization Unite for Sight, and will donate $50 from the proceeds of every pair of glasses purchased, enough to fund one sight-restoring surgery in the developing world.

KAYU was founded by Jamie Lim, who was born in the United States, but grew up in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. Inspired by the beauty of the region and touched by the inequality she witnessed, Jamie set out to create a line of ecological and ethical sunglasses that would help level the playing field for those with curable sight conditions in places like Africa and Asia.

The result is a super-chic pair of shades, made entirely of sustainable materials, that are so cool you’ll even want to wear them at night.
