The Butterfly Effect

Graphic artist, illustrator, and clothing designer Mika Machida has taken conceptual art to the next level with a signature line of cute creature-inspired threads. We first caught a glimpse of the statement making apparel at a green trunk show, where a beautifully draped one-shoulder butterfly top piqued our sartorial interest.

All of Machida’s designs start with an animal reference—from a flamingo dress fashioned from organic fabric and printed using a water-based silkscreen method, to an exquisitely detailed, asymmetric elephant top. Machida’s creations pay homage to the animal world without being too kitschy, a bonus being that part of the proceeds from the line are donated to the Wildlife Conservation Network to support endangered species and their habitats.

What’s more, knowing that Machida sources fabrics from bio-dynamic farmers and that all silkscreen prints are done by hand with non-toxic, water-based inks is supremely impressive. An online shop will soon be launched (mikaorganic.com), but in the meantime, you can also find the animal-friendly wares on Inhabitat and Planet Threads.
