“Eco Shop” at American Eagle
Date: November 10, 2010 | Category: Fashion, Men, Women

Want an all-American look that’s also conscious of the precious natural resources this nation boasts? We’re always excited when we see mainstream brands start to incorporate pieces or collections that are more environmentally conscious, and American Eagle’s “Eco Shop” is one such example.
Available exclusively online, there’s an “Eco Shop” section for both Men and Women, with basic tees, long sleeve thermals and hoodies that utilize water-based inks as well as organic and recycled materials. Prices range from $19.50 to $49.50, and the “eco” factor ranges a bit too - we recommend sticking with the 100% organic cotton items, or the ones that use more than 60% recycled cotton, over the items that are blending natural and non-natural fabrics, like organic cotton and recycled polyester. According to cradle-to-cradle philosophy, blending a biological nutrient (like organic cotton) and a technical nutrient (like recycled polyester) means the piece can no longer biodegrade or be fully recycled (a little bit of a blend is tolerable but the closer they get to 50/50, the harder it is to ensure the product will have a “second life”).
There are plenty of great pieces to choose from and we’re pleased that a company that has traditionally not offered any eco-friendly options is responding to consumer demand and taking small steps to incorporate pieces into their line. Next season, let’s hope for even more!
