The Grass Is Greener in Napa

Being a Bay Area native, I rarely make it out to wine country anymore - except to dine at my eco-ultimate eatery Ubuntu and take a yoga class upstairs. But now there’s a great reason to head north. On Saturday, August 2nd, the Think Green-World Music Festival will host a full-day event showcasing live bands, green businesses, workshops on sustainable living, an interactive kid’s area, plus organic eats and drinks all set against Napa’s picturesque backdrop.

ReKindling my Love of Reading

A recent article in Publisher’s Weekly caused me to reexamine the way I get my fill of news and fiction. Having started my environmental career in the world of print publishing, my emotional sympathies run deep. I’ll also admit a guilty fondness for design magazines, especially the ones printed on recycled paper with soy-based ink. But after reading that the US publishing industry dumps more than 12 million tons of carbon dioxide into our delicate ecosphere each and every year, I decided it was time to go electronic.

Easy Rider

Governor Kulongoski of Oregon recently made headlines for doing what so many eco-conscious residents in his state have done for years: He biked to work. Since most of us aren’t blessed with a two-mile commute and dedicated cycle paths, having a sturdy, portable set of wheels can mean the difference between hitting the gas pump and the pedal. STRiDA is making life in the bike lane more fun and fashionable.

Valley of the Roses

When it comes to hitting the bubbly, we’ve got a soft spot for all things sweetly beneficial. That’s why it was love at first sniff when we chanced upon this splashy bouquet of artisanal soaps at the local Farmer’s Market in San Francisco. Creators Nancy and Arthur Rosenthal have been gathering and lathering buds from their organic garden in Sebastopol, California for 10 years in the quest to cross-pollinate intoxicating fragrance with supple skin-tone, yielding their Valley of the Roses collection.

Garcia Designs Are Sheer Delight

Designer Elena Garcia brings us the newest eco-designs from across the pond. Garcia launched her eponymous, eco-fashion line earlier this year. Sourcing locally wherever possible and using earth-friendly dyes and production methods, Garcia is an active member of the Ethical Fashion Forum, the Conscious Designers Collective, the Eco-Design Network and Craft Central. She also designs for Sew Last Season, a label known for upcycling (recycling garments into new pieces - in this case upscale).
