Off to Market

In lieu of the farmer’s market today, zip on over to the Facebook Marketplace and do a little online shopping to support your favorite charity.

The new Facebook Marketplace lets you sell anything and donate the money to a charity of your choice. To kick off this new application, Facebook is launching an initiative called “Celebrities Selling for a Cause.”

Our own Zem Joaquin is selling a green ecoist cocktail purse made from misprinted luna bar wrappers to benefit Healthy Child, Healthy World. This is a very limited edition bag so bid on it now and join ecofabulous in supporting Healthy Child, Healthy World to inspire parents to protect young children from harmful chemicals.

Look for ecoist on The Find Green.

You’ll Love This “Leather”

This Matt & Nat bag is soft and supple in a way that screams distressed leather, but, alas, it is faux. Moving away from leather is a decision many make for the sake of animal welfare and others for planetary health. It’s been a point of contention amongst greenies, because often PVC is used as a leather alternative, which is anything but eco-friendly.

Vegan companies have been catching on to this fact though, and Canada-based designers Matt & Nat - who have dominated the vegan bag market for some time now - are offering a line of Japanese paper “leather” purses that both PETA and NRDC members would be proud to sport. But what’s more, any fashionista would don one of these rockin’ sacks.

A Vision for the Times

Eco-Luxury has infiltrated one of Los Angeles’s high-end shopping districts. Visionary Boutique on Melrose fits right in the neighborhood with everything an LA woman ‘on the shop’ could dream of – but when you leave, it’s hard to look at the products in the neighboring stores without a new green lens. Why Om Y?

Yoga is a beautiful thing. Only thing is, many of the products that support your poses are anything but healthy. Everything associated with yoga should be as conscious as your asanas. Most bags that make transporting your mat a little less clumsy are made of petroleum based material or pesticide-laden conventional cotton. (more…)

Feed the Whole World

According to The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. goes through 100 billion plastic shopping bags annually, and making them requires an estimated 12 million barrels of oil! Choosing reusable shopping bags is one of the easiest ways to cut down on your waste and take a simple step in the path towards living sustainably. Thankfully, there are now a lot of eco-totes on the market, but they are not all created equally! A little more fulfilling than most is the Whole Foods FEED 100 bag. (more…)

Bag this Deal!

Ditching plastic bags is an honorable goal but if you want to lift your eco efforts to the next level, using totes made from organic cotton is the way to go. While we applaud anyone who forgoes plastic in favor of a reusable tote, many of the bags that tout themselves as eco-friendly aren’t really green.

SKN makes bags that fit the bill, ecologically speaking, and the company is currently offering ecofabulous readers a fabulous deal on its 100 percent organic cotton – and super cute – totes. The bags, which measure 12″ wide, 16″ high and 6″ deep and hold up to 40 pounds, are large enough to carry dinner home from the market and stylish enough that you can be eco on the sly if you so desire.

The bags retail for $34.95 but by typing in the promotional code “happy holidays,” ecofabulous readers will save 20 percent through Dec. 1st!

Recruiting Buffalo Soldiers

The most eco-friendly way to acquire new clothes is to buy them second-hand. But the words “thrift shop” don’t always conjure images of couture, and the idea of sifting through musty racks keeps many people away. But breathing new life into used items is a tenet of green living, which is why everyone seems to be excited that Buffalo Exchange, a hip clothing exchange shop with locations all over the country, is expanding into New York City.

Buffalo Exchange’s first store in Manhattan, at 332 E. 11th Street (between 1st and 2nd Avenue), will open in late November. A sustainable company that works to protect the environment by reusing and recycling clothing, it is a choosy shopper’s source for fashionable clothing and accessories. Items are bought, sold and traded directly with store customers, and used garments can be traded for any item in the store, including jewelry and brand-new clothing (beware of these un-eco items, though). The ever-changing inventory includes designer wear, vintage clothing, jeans, leather and one-of-a-kind items.

So march down to the East Village and trade in your old duds for some new (to you!) ones.

The City of Angels Earns Its Wings

The red carpet got striped in green last weekend with the launch of Designers & Agents’ First Annual Green Market Event. Held from October 17th to 19th, D&A played host to more than a thousand leaders in sustainable fashion, design, lifestyle and community, including some of our fav designers, Form & Fauna, Edun, Stewart + Brown and Loomstate, and our friends over at Inhabitat who chatted up visitors in the “Green Room.” Co-hosted by contemporary furnishings guru, FordBrady, the trade show also marked the debut of Coco Eco Magazine by Anna Griffin.

Designers who wished to participate in the event had to demonstrate that at least 60 percent of their product line was made through sustainable practices. To offset the carbon footprint of those traveling from afar, a tree was planted in honor of each registered guest. Green Market Co-founders, Barbara Kramer and Ed Mandelbaum, hope the synergy created from bringing so much talent together under one living roof will inspire more fashion-forward businesses to grow from the root up.
