A One-Day 101 on Brooklyn Green

Calling all New Yorkers! If you’re in or around Brooklyn this coming Thursday (September 18th), the 4th Annual Green Brooklyn Event put on by The Center for the Urban Environment will be packing in a full day fair and symposium where attendees can get the lowdown from local experts on socially conscious investing, solarizing one’s building, choosing non-toxic home products (and of course where to buy them), how real urbanites compost, shopping eco-chic, and what New York City is doing to create a more sustainable future. And alongside a farmer’s market will be booths where you can make art from recycled products, catch a film, and more. How we wish we could hop on a plane for this one…we hear algae-based ethenol is coming to airfield everywhere soon. Then we might have gone!

From Shovel to Fork

Everyone has been talking about the success of the huge Slow Food event that took over San Francisco a couple of weeks ago. If you missed it or just cannot get enough, on October 5th, beneath a harvest moon at the extraordinary Barndiva Gardens in Healdsburg, Calif., Fork & Shovel is collaborating with Slow Food Russian River to throw an evening to be remembered. This is not merely an opportunity to show support for Sonoma’s premier chefs and farmers collaborative, but also a night of unique activities including a jug band, Farm Roulette and an interactive food shed walk. Of course there will also be amazing fare - appetizers and a five course, wine-paired dinner grown, cooked and served by Fork & Shovel sustainable chef and farmer teams. Get your slow food tickets here… fast!

Come Hither Sweetie

Would you be upset if two of your best employees decided to leave you to start their own company? You might, if they didn’t satiate you with ridiculously delicious cupcakes. Yes, stylish little cakes are all the rage, but these perfect confections have the added bonus of being dairy-free. With cocktail-inspired flavors like toasted coconut colada, lemon drop and strawberry daiquiri, you know you are in for a seriously good time. Out of the goodness of our hearts, the rest of the ecofabulous team has been taste testing Come Hither’s treats. (more…)

Haute House on the Prairie

Just a couple of years ago you would have to trawl numerous watering holes to land an organic cocktail but, luckily, times have changed! We enthusiastically welcome Praire Vodka to the bar. It is sure to regularly be gracing our ecofabulous aluminum martini glass (click here for details on the glass)… and found in our favorite eco pomegranate cosmo recipe. (more…)

Salt of the Earth

I’ll admit, that in the past I was fairly content with my Mediterranean sea salt. But what girl can resist dazzling pink crystals. Though I was wowed, the Himalayan pink salt still had to survive a grueling taste test with the rest of the discerning ecofab crew. So we dashed the rosy condiment on everything from fresh sliced tomatoes and grilled vegetables to a thin-crust margarita pizza. And the verdict was unanimous: These crystals rock!

Available in a 4-ounce glass or a 5-pound bag, the robust organic salt is harvested from a brackish spring located deep in the mountains of Peru. Adding a crunchy texture to sweets and savories, the flavor is milder and more nuanced than traditional salt. It also adds a sultry kick to a margarita, especially if you serve up one infused with watermelon or strawberry. Great for home or a gift, this is one bottle no ecofab kitchen should do without.

Hung Up on Eco

When the ecofabulous team decides to go out for a beer, we try to keep it full-flavored, organic and from local producers. So, though the soon-to-be launched MillerCoors’ 64 calorie beer doesn’t appeal to our particular sensibilities, their latest marketing tool is creative indeed. Miller has partnered with EcoHanger to produce 100% recycled clothing hangers that are being introduced in Seattle and Portland dry cleaners to their female clientele (though we know a guy or two who would be charged about a low-cal beer). EcoHanger promises these hangers last longer than traditional metal ones in addition to using completely eco-friendly materials. Now you can crack a cold one while hanging up your sweaters.
