The Trunk Show, Wrinkles and All

What do you get when you combine 18 designers, six elephants, 100 meters of eco-friendly fabric and 25 liters of non-toxic fabric paint? The trunk show to end all trunk shows.

If you’re in New York City tonight, don’t miss the Elephant Art Fashion Show & Auction. The Asian Elephant Art & Conservation Project (AEACP) is sponsoring a runway show of garments from 21 designers made from eco-friendly fabric that have been painted by domestic elephants in Thailand and Indonesia (yes, the pachyderms do the painting!). An auction of the pieces takes place immediately following the show.

Tickets are $50 per person and all proceeds go to AEACP. This non-profit (your tickets are tax-deductible) is dedicated to improving the welfare of domesticated elephants, while simultaneously fighting for the conservation and protection of wild elephants. The elephant paintings create a safe, alternative source of income for out-of-work elephants and caretakers that would otherwise have to resort to illegal logging or begging on the streets. The completed works of art continue to tell a story and raise awareness to the plight of wild Asian elephants.

So next time you’re stuck in a clothing rut for a dinner party simply slip on your striking dress designed by Stewart + Brown, painted by Sela the elephant and let your attire lead the way for interesting cocktail conversation.
