A “Cool” Jazz Event

In the spirit of Earth Day, SF JAZZ is greening its annual gala. This year, The Real McCoy Gala in honor of jazz legend McCoy Tyner will truly be one “cool” event.

SFJAZZ is saving precious trees and reducing greenhouse gases by printing invitations, programs and other material for the event on recycled paper. The dinner served to gala patrons will include organic and locally-sourced produce, and TCHO chocolates will be served. All fish served by the hotel is approved by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program.

In the silent auction, guests will have a chance to win eco-chic items such as pampering treatments from the Epi Center eco-MedSpa, Juice Beauty skincare, a set of designer organic bedding from the new luxury homewares company Goldiehome. Offering eco-friendly goodies in the gift bags including popchips, McEvoy Ranch organic olive oil, and more.

The SFJAZZ Real McCoy Gala is being held at the Four Seasons Hotel in San Francisco, which has initiated a number of “cool” green measures of its own. The property achieves a 75 percent diversion rate through recycling and composting and has a long-standing partnership with Food Runners to deliver excess food to homeless shelters. Glassware and cloth napkins are used wherever possible instead of disposables. The Four Seasons has also reduced energy consumption 10 percent to date by working with PG&E and the Business Energy Coalition and has added a peppy hybrid vehicle to the hotel’s chauffeured fleet.

Robert Mailer Anderson, the Chair of the SF JAZZ Gala, initiated the greening of this year’s gala. He has supported environmental initiatives in his personal life for many years, including installing a 137kW solar system for his family winery, Oakville Ranch Vineyards in Napa, Calif.
