From Refuse to Rembrandt

Careening down the palm-lined streets of Los Angeles, visual distractions abound, mainly in the form of billboards advertising everything from premium liqueurs to summer blockbusters. Sadly, these oversized vinyl creations meet an end that is often far from sustainable, creating bundles of waste whose final destination is the local landfill.

Peter Schulberg, the director of Eco-LogicalART gallery, saw trash-to-treasure potential in these sprawling spectacles, and has made them the core of an ongoing exhibition. Commissioning artists to use discarded vinyl as their canvases, Schulberg takes the recast urban artifacts and puts them on display both in and outside of his loft-like gallery space. The most rousing show takes place on the second Saturday of each month (excluding August), when high above Eco-LogicalART a new piece painted on a recycled billboard is revealed via dramatic curtain drop.

Quite frankly, we’re thankful that Johnny Depp’s handsome, enlarged visage on Public Enemies billboards will likely have a life after opening weekend.

Visit eco-logicalart.org for more information about the exhibit and its duration.
