Girls Gone Green

We’re constantly amazed by the energy, commitment and sheer force of the younger generation. Our work with Teens Turning Green has shown us the power of a student-led movement in encouraging behavior change and affecting policy, which is why we’re such huge fans of the new Girls Gone Green book from Lynn Hirschfield.

Lynn heads up Participant Media’s publishing division and has worked on award-winning television and film productions such as An Inconvenient Truth, Food Inc., The Cove, and more. The Girls Gone Green book profiles a generation of young women involved in environmental initiatives - some packing up and heading off to college, others still packing their lunch for elementary school. This book isn’t to say that there aren’t some incredible young men moving mountains out there as well (we were witness to some of these inspiring boys at the recent e4 conference in NYC), but as Lynn noticed during her time managing outreach for the social action campaigns surrounding Participant’s films, a vast majority of young green activists were girls.

The book profiles everyday green girls (as well as a handful of celebs like Hayden Panettiere, Ellen Page, Mischa Barton, Alicia Silverstone and Michelle Branch) that have stepped up and taken the initiative to affect change (full disclosure - there’s also a feature on ecofabulous founder, Zem Joaquin!). The book aims to shed light on some of the powerful work resulting from the passion of these young women, as well as inspire others to do the same. Available on Amazon for under $10, the book makes a great gift for all the ladies in your life!

I think it’s absolutely wonderful that the younger generation today is becoming more and more aware of the need to go Green and save the world’s resources for future generations. I think the best thing that we can do for them is to help them educate themselves. I think as I mother that when I find resources that have helped me and my children that I have a duty to pass them along in the hopes that they will have the same effect for other families. In that sentiment I would suggest that any family looking to further their Green efforts should visit http://www.greeneutopia.com

This site has been an excellent resource for myself and my family. Along with abundant information on current Green issues and ideas, they have a wonderful online store that was easy to use. They carry a whole line of Green products, some even made from recycled materials. The best part was that they were all very family affordable and saved us a great deal of money. I hope that all of you enjoy this resource as much as I have and that you will pay it forward and share new resources with all of your friends!
