Oil is History

Art can take on many forms, from Pollock’s chaotic splatters on canvas to large scale light installations. What’s rare, though, is hearing about pieces made with low VOC paints, energy-efficient bulbs, or sustainable materials. But an upcoming exhibit at artist Louise A. Marler’s stylish L.A. Marler Studio has turned art into environmental commentary. From staging to printing, the photographs in Marler’s “Oil is History” series send a direct message about transportation, pollution, and how both affect our surroundings.

This weekend, you can get a two-for-one green whammy by stopping by the AltCar Expo & Conference and breaking to check out Marler’s photographs when expo booths start to swarm with too much techie excitement. What you can expect are photos of junkyard car castaways juxtaposed against a lush green background, showing the ways that industry and nature often clash.

Marler uses more eco-sensitive gicleé digital printing for her work and uses frames made of reclaimed materials, closing the loop and solidifying her artistic vision. News of eco-art seems to be bubbling up more often these days, so we look forward to discovering a new guard of Earth-crusading Klimts and Dalis for this generation.

The AltCar Expo and Conference will be held at The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium (1855 Main Street, Santa Monica) and admission is free. Louise Marler’s exhibit can be seen at L.A. Marler Studio and Gallery (hangar, 3000-B Airport Avenue, Santa Monica) from noon until 8:00 PM.
