ReKindling my Love of Reading
Date: July 29, 2008 | Category: Lifestyle, Tech
A recent article in Publisher’s Weekly caused me to reexamine the way I get my fill of news and fiction. Having started my environmental career in the world of print publishing, my emotional sympathies run deep. I’ll also admit a guilty fondness for design magazines, especially the ones printed on recycled paper with soy-based ink. But after reading that the US publishing industry dumps more than 12 million tons of carbon dioxide into our delicate ecosphere each and every year, I decided it was time to go electronic.
Unlike my husband, I’m not an early adopter of gizmos and gadgets (having to get the newest thing is a little anti-eco). But Amazon’s Kindle (which was given to me by a dear friend who decided I NEEDED one) has brought out my inner geek. I can now download books by the dozens and read all my favorite periodicals and mags without worrying about deforestation. While I’m hoping the next gen Kindle uses more post-consumer waste to make their faux-leather cover and shell, this is definitely one giant step for green kind. And my husband…well he has co-opted it for his morning ferry rides, insisting that he needs it to accompany his commuter mug of organic green tea!
